Inspiration
I was in the closet for 2 year and lived in constant fear of being outed. At the same time, I was discovering myself and had no clue where to find safe, trustworthy resources that would aid me in my journey. Through social media and research, I was able to pick and choose different resources that were extremely friendly and knowledgable sources for me to look through.
What it does
ClosetHelp provides discrete access to resources surrounding the LGBTQ+ community to aid teens that are discovering themselves.
How we built it
Through the use of frameworks pygame and web browser, I created a simple interface that upon clicking a specific button, takes the user to a resource surrounding a topic they are looking into.
Challenges we ran into
I ran into problems surrounding clearing the display, finding and correctly using pygame functions, and creating my 4-click access feature.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that I was able to create a resource that the younger me would have loved to have. I had very few resources to turn to when I was discovering myself and hence, struggled to find myself. Through ClosetHelp, I have been able to solve my problem and help others work around the struggles that I faced.
What we learned
I've learned the difficulty in making a remotely aesthetically pleasing display. I've also learned about the vast abilities of python and specifically, pygame, and how it has uses that extend far past just games.
What's next for ClosetHelp
I hope to improve the visuals and make the interface more aesthetically pleasing. Additionally, I would like to add a blog where people can submit their stories surrounding coming out, gaining gender affirming care, combating anti-LGBTQ legislation, and more to educate and provide insight about individuals in the LGBTQ community.
