Turning Focus Into Feedback
What Inspired Us
As students, we often leave study sessions thinking we were productive, only to realize later that distractions quietly took over. Phones, multitasking, and loss of focus are common, yet there is no clear way to measure attention itself. That gap inspired our project.
We wanted to create a tool that helps students understand not just how long they studied, but how focused they actually were.
How We Built the Project
Our app analyzes focus in real time during study sessions. It detects when attention drops and provides gentle guidance to help users re-engage. After each session, the app generates a summary that highlights focus trends and patterns.
We approached productivity as attention sustained over time, which can be represented as:
[ \text{Productivity} \propto \int_0^T \text{Focus}(t)\,dt ]
This model guided both our technical design and our user experience decisions.
What We Learned
Through this project, we learned the importance of meaningful feedback. Clear, timely insights are more effective than large amounts of raw data. We also gained experience with real-time analysis, system integration, and designing features that support habit building rather than interrupting it.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was balancing accuracy with usability. Measuring focus in real time without distracting the user required careful design and testing. We also faced technical challenges related to performance, data consistency, and integrating multiple components under time constraints.
Each challenge pushed us to refine our approach and strengthen both the product and our collaboration.
Final Outcome
Instead of guessing how productive a study session was, our app shows students exactly where their attention went. By turning attention into actionable feedback, we help students build better habits, study smarter, and get more done in less time.
