Inspiration

Diversity in clinical trials represents a critical gap in medication testing that accelerates health disparities in underrepresented communities. This crisis prompted the FDA to release Diversity Action Plan (DAP) guidelines in April 2022, mandating sponsors to include enrollment goals and strategies for diverse populations in their clinical study protocols. Over the past three years, pharmaceutical companies have actively sought avenues to build and sustain patient trust and retention among underrepresented communities. Our group was inspired to create an application that breaks barriers to access for patients and supports providers research capabilities.

What it does

Our platform breaks down participation barriers by providing patients with multilingual educational resources, symptom tracking capabilities, appointment note management, and real-time trial progress updates from providers. For healthcare providers, ClinicalConnect offers concise access to patient insights, educational resource distribution tools, and streamlined trial progression updates. The app creates a continuous line of communication that extends beyond clinical visits, empowering patients with digital journals and educational access while providing researchers with comprehensive patient insights.

How we built it

We built it using the AI tool Base44 in 5 prompts. We spent the majority of the prompts debugging, trying different prompts, and losing our minds every time our app would break from a prompt. After trial and error, we obtained a (mostly) functional app.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into challenges with prompt engineering and editing specific parts of the application while fixing errors. Specifically, when we would debug with prompts, entering prompts past 4-5 entries would break the website completely. Because we do not know exactly what is going on in Base44's algorithm and due to our lack of experience, we are unable to pinpoint exact issues. Therefore, we were mostly limited to altering any prompts that broke the code and experimenting with our wording to successfully implement our requests.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Completing the application in 5 only prompts! For the most part, we also got the app to be fully functional without any actual data being entered.

What we learned

We learned prompt engineering, communication amongst a team, and compiling evidence-based research. It was interesting to see how much Base44 would alter the app from a single sentence being tweaked or added.

What's next for ClinicalConnect

Implementing a backend and making the data exportable. We would ideally like to improve the overall experience, and actually implement multiple languages to support as many communities as possible that may utilize ClinicalConnect.
