Inspiration 🌟

Previous healthcare background - Ex-Machine learning intern at Kaiser Permanente (one of America's largest healthcare providers) and volunteer student at Vanderbilt Medical & Williamson County Hospital, TN Through my experiences there, I noticed a significant gap in healthcare: many people, especially those from minority communities, aren't included in clinical trials. For example:

• African American women have high rates of breast cancer deaths, but make up only 6% of breast cancer trial participants 🎗️
• African American men get prostate cancer twice as often as Asian men, but are only 9% of trial participants ⚕️ When medicines aren't tested on diverse groups, they might not work well for everyone. We created ClinicalConnect to help solve this problem by making clinical trials easier to find for all people. 💪

What it does 🚀

ClinicalConnect is an AI-powered web application that:

• Easy to Use: Patients can enter their health information through a simple form
• Smart Matching: Our system finds trials that match their health conditions 🧩
• Clear Explanations: We show why someone might or might not qualify for each trial ✅
• Doctor Friendly: Healthcare providers can use it to recommend trials to patients 🏥

How I built it 🛠️

• MeldRx Platform: Registered and published our app on app.meldrx.com
• OpenAI LLMs: Used LLM models to understand complex trial requirements
• Next.js & React: For a fast, responsive website
• Tailwind CSS: For a clean, easy-to-use design
• FHIR R4 Integration: We connect to FHIR resources for patient data
• SMART on FHIR: Implemented standard launch protocols for EHR integration

Challenges we ran into 🏃‍♀️

• Complex Eligibility Criteria: Clinical trials have complicated requirements that are hard to understand 📝
• FHIR Data Mapping: Making patient information from FHIR resources match with trial requirements was tricky 🔄
• Making it Simple: Creating a website that's easy for everyone to use took a lot of work
• Performance Optimization: Making sure the website stays quick even when looking through many trials
