Despite being under umbrella of large hospitals using sophisticated and centralized information management systems, daily operations of the clinical laboratories (within hospitals or independent), may have insufficient organizational efficiency due to lack of tools customized to the needs of clinical laboratories, thus forcing laboratories to rely on archaic means of managing analyses, personnel, assay results and reporting. Clinical Laboratory Manager System V1.0 (CLMS) provides a fully customizable, web-based and platform independent solution for managing the operations of clinical laboratories with expandable architecture capable of customization to needs of different types of laboratories and assays performed in the lab.

We have created a fully customizable, web based and platform independent application for clinical laboratories that would enable clinical laboratories performing complex manual assays to better manage their information, throughput, personnel, assays and results. Typically, Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) are used to manage laboratory testing from accessioning specimens to hosting final diagnosis/test results that are sent to centralized EMR systems. There are many steps that take place within the laboratory between accessioning a request and reporting out the results, for e.g., assigning assays to technologists, tracking multiple assay steps, managing specimen information, creating assay workflows, and storing and organizing assay raw results, that are not managed by commonly used LIS’s, such as CoPath and SunQuest. Therefore, these steps are generally managed by paper worksheets, machine printouts and Excel spreadsheets or some combination. Storing specimen information and results in text files or excel documents not only hampers look up of information at any given time, it also makes room for introducing error by deleting, or mistakenly editing such files (“Transcriptional” errors).

CLMS provides a fully customizable architecture for clinical laboratories to manage information, assays, results and personnel all at one place. The application is a web based tool, with a secure backend database, hosted on secure network for ease of access. The application allows clinical laboratories to • Manage and track current and archival specimen information • Manage assays, by enabling ‘interactive and step-by-step’ workflows designs for conducting experiments • Store, manage, review and report out assay results • Organize results in a single database for easy lookup • Manage specimen related documentation (such as images, text and pdf files) • Manage assay SOP’s and quick-guides • Produce interactive performance statistics to analyze laboratory throughput.
