Inspiration

Healthcare professionals often need to make quick decisions while considering a patient's medical history, allergies, medications, and symptoms. Missing critical information or overlooking drug interactions can lead to serious consequences. We wanted to build an AI-powered clinical assistant that helps organize patient information, identify potential risks, and provide preliminary diagnostic insights to support—not replace—clinical decision-making.

What it does

ClinicalAI is an AI-powered clinical decision support platform that allows healthcare professionals to:

  • Register and manage patient records securely.
  • Store medical history, allergies, medications, symptoms, and uploaded medical reports.
  • Analyze patient information using AI to generate preliminary diagnostic suggestions.
  • Highlight potential medication conflicts, allergies, contraindications, and other clinical risks.
  • Provide structured AI-generated recommendations that assist clinicians in making informed decisions.

The platform is designed as a decision-support tool and is not intended to replace professional medical judgment.

How we built it

We developed ClinicalAI using a modern full-stack architecture:

  • Frontend: React, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS, and Vite
  • Backend: Python with FastAPI
  • Database: SQLite with SQLAlchemy ORM and Alembic migrations
  • AI: Large Language Model integration for clinical analysis
  • Authentication: JWT-based user authentication
  • Containerization: Docker and Docker Compose
  • Testing: Automated backend tests with Pytest

The backend follows a layered architecture consisting of API routes, service layer, repositories, schemas, and database models, making the project modular and easy to extend.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the biggest challenges included:

  • Designing a scalable backend architecture while keeping the codebase maintainable.
  • Structuring clinical data in a way that could be effectively interpreted by the AI model.
  • Managing secure authentication and API communication between the frontend and backend.
  • Configuring Docker, database migrations, and environment management.
  • Ensuring that AI responses were structured, meaningful, and clinically relevant rather than simple text generation.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built a complete full-stack healthcare application from scratch.
  • Successfully integrated AI-powered clinical analysis into the workflow.
  • Designed a modular backend architecture with clean separation of concerns.
  • Implemented secure authentication and patient data management.
  • Containerized the application for easier deployment.
  • Created comprehensive documentation and automated tests for maintainability.

What we learned

This project significantly strengthened our understanding of:

  • Full-stack application development
  • FastAPI and REST API design
  • Authentication using JWT
  • Database design and migrations
  • Docker-based development and deployment
  • AI integration into real-world applications
  • Structuring software using clean architecture principles

Most importantly, we learned how AI can be used responsibly to assist healthcare professionals while recognizing the importance of keeping humans in the decision-making loop.

What's next for ClinicalAI

Future improvements include:

  • Integration with electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • OCR support for extracting information from laboratory reports and prescriptions.
  • Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) using trusted medical literature to improve AI accuracy.
  • Explainable AI that cites the reasoning behind recommendations.
  • Role-based access control for different healthcare professionals.
  • Cloud deployment with scalable infrastructure.
  • Real-time collaboration features for multidisciplinary clinical teams.
  • Support for multilingual patient interactions and voice-based consultations.
