Inspiration
We’ve all been there: a "quick check" on social media turns into an hour-long doomscroll. We wanted to transform the uphill battle of time management into a rewarding ascent. Inspired by RPGs, we built Climb to make productivity feel less like a chore and more like a game where you’re the main character.
What it does
Climb is a cross-device ecosystem that tracks your focus in real-time. It uses a reward and penalty system to keep you on track. Stay focused on your "deep work" apps to earn points and climb the leaderboard; linger too long on "unproductive" apps, and you'll face penalties that nudge you back to your tasks.
How we built it
Since our team started with limited experience in advanced coding, we leaned heavily on Google AI Studio to help us prototype the logic and structure of the app. We used JavaScript for the primary functionality and implemented Node.js as a wrapper to translate our scripts into a cohesive backend. This allowed us to focus on the user experience while letting AI help bridge our technical gaps.
Challenges we ran into
The steep learning curve of app development was our first hurdle. Specifically, we struggled with data synchronization—trying to ensure that rewards and penalties updated instantly across every part of the app was a massive puzzle. Coordinating our JavaScript logic through the Node.js wrapper required a lot of trial and error to get the "ecosystem" feeling seamless.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of being able to produce a functional prototype at all given that we had zero previous exposure to advanced coding. Transitioning from "barely-code" backgrounds to a working ecosystem in 24 hours is a huge milestone for us.
What we learned
This project was a crash course in full-stack logic and AI-assisted development. We learned how to use Google AI Studio as a technical bridge, how to structure a Node.js backend, and the complexities of JavaScript data synchronization. Above all, we learned that technical barriers can be overcome with a clear goal and the right collaborative tools.
What's next for Climb App
We plan to refine Climb into a seamless cross-platform experience by:
Enhancing Aesthetics: Adding immersive soundscapes and deeper character interactions for a true RPG feel.
Expanding Control: Improving "outside app" tracking to allow for smarter, automated redirections.
AI Integration: Using Google AI Studio to build predictive focus nudges that adapt to user behavior
