Emoji Auction
Inspiration
I was inspired by the idea of creating a fun and interactive way for Reddit users to engage with each other through emoji-based bidding. Auctions are exciting, and integrating them with Reddit's comment system felt like a creative challenge.
What it does
Emoji Auction allows subreddit members to bid on a virtual auction using emojis and numbers in comments. The highest bid is updated in real-time, and when the auction ends, the winner is announced.
How we built it
The project was built using Devvit, Reddit’s developer platform, along with TypeScript. I used Devvit’s API to handle comment events, detect bid submissions, and manage auction states. The backend logic ensures that the highest bid is always tracked and displayed.
Challenges we ran into
- Getting subreddit approval and avoiding bans was unexpectedly difficult.
- Parsing and validating emoji bids correctly while ensuring smooth event handling.
- Managing state in a serverless environment to track active auctions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully implementing a functional auction system within Reddit.
- Learning how to work with Devvit’s API and event triggers efficiently.
- Overcoming initial challenges with bid parsing and improving the user experience.
What we learned
- How to leverage Devvit for automating subreddit interactions.
- Effective error handling and debugging in a serverless environment.
- The importance of community guidelines and subreddit management.
What's next for Emoji Auction
- Adding more customization options for subreddit moderators.
- Implementing a leaderboard to track top bidders over time.
- Exploring ways to integrate real rewards or subreddit-specific perks for winners.
