Inspiration

Our game is inspired by the profound significance of the glaciers, which cover 10% of the Earth's surface and provide 70% of the world's fresh water. We aim to raise awareness about the melting ice caps and promote action on climate change, aligning with the Arctic community and Sustainable Development Goal 13.

What it does

Our game is a platform runner game, featuring a polar bear who runs through different time periods, ranging from pre-industrial revolution to a future where all the ice has melted. The player controls the bear as it dodges obstacles. As time passes, the environment shifts, from being primarily ice to almost all water with the shadows of factories in the background. Occasionally, the player is met with a question or fact about the SDG in our chosen community.

How we built it

The program was built using kaboom.js, a JavaScript library that makes game development faster and easier. All the graphics were designed through Canva.

Challenges we ran into

Due to the short timeframe, we had to ensure our project would be feasible and adhere to the criteria. The main challenge was getting used to using Kaboom, and learning how to use the framework’s built-in functions properly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We overcame many challenges in a short period of time! We learned how to create a game, using a new framework. We are proud of everything we accomplished today as a whole, including our time management skills!

What we learned

We learned how to use Kaboom, and debug all our problems! We also learned about how game development works, and how to incorporate the moving graphics into it.

What's next for Climate Sprint

For future developments, we hope to incorporate different environments into the game, such as deserts and tropical forests. Global warming is a significant problem that affects more than one climate, and we seek to spread awareness about all the environments it affects. Additionally, we are looking for more ways to educate youth through past and future solutions, such as geoengineering ice. By raising awareness about the climate actions we should and are taking, we can help prepare the future generations for what is to come!
