what we are doing
We are working with mamawatoto.link groups in Machakos , Konza, and Njiru Kenta to address climate impacts with eco actions like tree planting nurseries, solar and electronics upcycling, composting education and pilot sites, plastic burn mapping and collection for recycle sales, carbon sequestering agriculture improvements with cover cropping and amendments. We have been renting a space in Machakos to function as an NFT Hub, community center, and plant nursery.
What it does
This service allows climate credit DAO verifiers to create wallets for community members and make NFT ownership on Hedera tangible . Ottercoin NFTs are transferred to good actors for performing potentially climate friendly actions. Activites are tracked in the NFT metadata and tallied on climate credit sales portal where partner scdhub.org reviews and authorizes the sale of climate credits based on third party reviewer standards .
Production of 3d clay form and educational poem and song NFTs are underway and will use this wallet to compliment our opensea efforts.
where we are at
This project is simply a starting point which makes use of the open source Hedera wallet available on github . We are eager to continue our testing and to produce a well documented climate credit token for small producers. Many climate projects are not well documented and cater to large corporate interests. Our approach highlights the efforts of the everyday person and training in future resiliency and well documented climate efforts married to the needs of community.
Challenges I ran into.
We have been testing wallets in Kenya I am in the US .. we made use of an Algorand wallet which is at https://mamawatoto.github.io which has nice DAO features which helped our groups to see what was possible and where we are going with this DAO system .. the testnet tokens had worked well initially but later did not show up in our wallets. The Hedera wallet worked well for minting NFTs and transparently using the pinata.cloud ipfs service , but did not work on phones .. so some simple UI changes will get us back into testing with this wallet .. adding metadata is easy which we love, and DAO features seem to be possible as our next step. I am learning what is possible as momentum increases on the ground with our ecological communty work in Machakos.
Accomplishments
We are proud of how far we have gotten with our location in Machakos and new plastics depot & ecoshop in Konza. Our relationship to local schools, homeless youth, and churches has developed. We are proud of the mapping done and formation of Garbagemap.org to support locals documenting neglected duties of county waste management that put the public at risk. Relative to those sites, and increased awareness on the health impacts of burning plastics. We are proud of our nursery and the literacy in tech and eco works which is increasing. We have forged several relationships in the community which are perfect for granting NFTs toward climate credit trading which we look forward to growing with training sessions in the use of the Climate Credit DAO Wallet. So far, we have been restricted to the use of cyber cafe connections, due to limited data availability on mobile connections in Kenya.
What I learned
A small contribution goes a long way in Kenya and there is incredible need for transparency tools to prevent misuse of public funds and education about climate science and practical approaches like the creation of fuels from waste plastic
