Inspiration
Climate Change is an urgent global issue that poses serious threats to the environment, human health, and many other aspects of humanity. Despite its significance, the public’s understanding of the subject is quite limited, as is their knowledge of the steps they can take to prevent it. There is a clear need to educate and engage people, especially younger generations, about Climate Change in an accessible and easy to act upon manner.
What it does
To address the pressing need for sustainability and resource conservation, we've created Climate Cow—a mobile app that offers a fun approach to promote eco-conscious behavior. Climate Cow is an interactive platform designed to raise users' awareness of their carbon footprint by providing them with specialized tasks they can complete daily to reduce it. These tasks are tailored to the intensity of the user’s footprint which is determined through a simple survey that calculates this when the app is first opened. By completing these personalized challenges, users not only contribute to mitigating their environmental impact but also enjoy a rewarding experience as the app's central character, the Climate Cow, switches from sadness to joy with each accomplished task.
How we built it
We used Code.org and Vanilla JavaScript for the logic and code. Beyond that, we also utilized Procreate to develop images and animations for the cow.
Challenges we ran into
We experienced numerous challenges with the coding of components such as the survey as well as question randomization. Creating interactive text boxes where the user could input numbers we’d use to calculate was something we’d never done before, and it took a lot of time to debug. Question randomization was equally as hard, however through research and trial and error we were able to figure out how to code it
Accomplishments that we're proud of
First and foremost we are extremely proud of ourselves for completing the app’s code within the time restraint. To think we were able to create animations, create an app with multiple windows, design and have a nice UI, and code something interactive to the user in two days is something we take pride in. Additionally, we are proud of everything we were able to learn in just two days and the coding skills we’ve gained.
What we learned
In just two days of coding for our Hackathon project, we discovered loads about cutting down carbon footprints. We learned about what contributes to a person’s carbon footprint as well as the calculations needed to find the amount of carbon emission someone generates in a whole year. Working together, my partner and I also learned how to code on Code.org and use Javascript— a language we hadn’t known before. Even more, we mastered the act of time management as we weren’t able to procrastinate for even a second in order to complete our app.
What's next for Climate Cow
We hope to add more features to the app such as a login page for users and leaderboards to encourage users to complete their tasks. We’d also like to make the app more gamified and have it so that the user gains XP each time a task is completed, moving them further along the leaderboard and their own personal journey. Furthermore, we’d like to improve the UI and overall aesthetic of our app, making it more visually appealing to our users. Lastly, we’d like to include an additional page within our app providing more rigorous steps one can take to lessen their carbon footprint, such as six month long and yearly plans.
