Inspiration

We wanted to make climate change and environmental issues fun and interesting for kids. As people who enjoy video games, we thought that making a fun little game would leave the biggest impact. Our biggest inspiration was the game Bloons Tower Defense 6.

What it does

The game is a tower defense style game about placing towers to destroy pieces of trash moving along a path towards your base, which is a tree.

How we built it

We used the game engine, GameMaker Studio, and used a variety of imported custom graphic assets. However, we found the royalty-free music we used online.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, we faced issues with the WiFi and computer. We originally planned to use a different game engine, Construct 3, however, it didn't work on the WiFi provided, so we switched to GameMaker Studio. This led to a variety of issues and having to learn how the software worked. Additionally, the computer kept crashing, making us lose progress. Additionally, when we outsourced some assets, we had to deal with the issue of assets having different resolutions and aspect ratios.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we were at least able to submit a project at all, especially since we ran into a variety of problems. We also were really proud of making all the visual assets, which were handmade by everyone on the team through Aseprite.

What we learned

We learned how to use a new game engine, GameMaker Studio, as well as enhanced our game development and teamwork skills. Most of our team learned pixel art through Aseprite as well.

What's next for Climate Chaos

We can add new waves, maybe publish the game, add a multiplayer feature, more types of towers, and definitely use our newfound skills in participating in more Hackathons in the future!
