Inspiration
Let’s make Uber-eats greener. I have a problem. For six months, I’ve been sitting, working at home, ordering Uber Eats for every meal. I’ve been having the same pad thai for lunch every single day.
Every day, I didn't realize what the impact was from my restaurant choices on the climate. What if I could not only measure the impact but also offset the produced carbon dioxide emissions for a minimal and fair fee.
Introducing PickUpr. Now, I can not only enjoy a delicious meal but also help save the planet! Every time I walk or bike to pick up my order, I reduce my carbon emissions. I even get a discount on my Zurich health insurance or Zurich LiveWell partners for doing the exercise!
If I do get delivery, PickUpr offers me the ability to offset my emissions with Climeworks. All I have to do is pick my restaurant of choice. It’s a win-win!
Soon, I’ll not only be able to get recommendations for the tastiest dish but also tell how sustainable it is based on the carefully picked ingredients.
Here at Pickupr, we have a global team of developers spread across three continents, ready to take over the world for the better.

Problem Statement
The carbon footprint from food delivery is still high and increasing. People stuck at home are not getting enough exercise Difficult to offset carbon footprint, people are not aware of the possibility
What it does
PickUpr gives you the best suggestion about your restaurant choice and how is the best way to get it to you, taken into account the best planet safety options. Also, the app gives you the right knowledge to understand how you can be very useful in the challenge of Climate Change!
How I built it
We build it using a combination of APIs to get the right information in real-time about the user location, nearby open restaurants, up-to-date delivery routes, and carbon dioxide emissions caused by delivery. The backend in NodeJS combines all the (proprietary) APIs in an easy and secure way. A React frontend uses this backend to visualize it to the user to maximize the user experience. Both applications are deployed on AWS.
Challenges I ran into
Stay connected to teammates all over the world in multiple timezones. Join all the differents APIs in a simple and user-friendly app.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Work with 3 people on 3 different continents.
What I learned
Mounting a web server using the last scripting languages (Node.js and React). Explore google places API.
What's next for PickUpr
- Social media post based on the inspiration
- Reduction in insurance premium by the carbon that would have otherwise been emitted
- Time period in which other people can choose to order as well (group buying)
- Also point out how much the restaurant is saving.
- Story beginning to pitch before call to action and future plans (order and see environmental impact of orders)
- Tracking people by getting them to take a geotagged photo when they arrive at the restaurant for their pick up
- Google Voice assistant not as the interface (as well as the visual one)
