Edison Eco

Inspiration

While thinking of problems to solve, we thought of different types of issues that we can create a tool to solve or bring awareness to. We wanted to use a problem that applies to a large audience, so a topic that can relate to not just the United States, but all types of the world. With this, we came to a agreement to base our project on Climate Change. Our goal was to create a info-graphic to provide information on how climate change is impacting different parts of the world as well as how much it is projected to grow in the near future. Alongside this, we wanted to implement different personalized tools that users can use to understand climate change in their area as well as methods or organizations they can use to help the cause.

Functionality

Edison Eco is a web resource used to access different information and reports on climate change from different countries. It displays this information through content as well as graphs to display how different aspects of our environment has shifted over the past few decades. Alongside these articles, we include a system to view your local area or region and view how climate impact is affecting. This is done through a geographic map with map waves which compares the globe with climate change levels from previous decades. We also include a page of different organizations you can donate to or look more into to support the development of a better Earth.

Procedure for Invention

We used HTML within Python. Our process was creating a main home page which we included more links to lead to inner pages which involved our tools and content. We also includes many images which we were able to format using a center tag. We wanted to use Python first as that was what we had experience in, but then we figured that for the type of project we were approaching HTML would be more effective and better.

Obstacles we Faced

To be honest, our whole team's experience with web development and languages like HTML and Python. Although one of us had minimal experience with a course they had taken earlier in the school year. With this, we were able to use the basics and implement our ideas onto the site. Other issues we had within our HTML code itself was implementing images and GIFs onto our site as it got scattered through our files.

Accomplishments

Being able to put together a functional website was a big task from the start. To be frank, we were a bit clueless at the start. But as we put our ideas together, things started to come together very quickly. Upon developing on the basics of coding a website, we started to advance into new fields with implementing images, links, inner pages, and formatting. Putting all of these together, was able to put together a great and informative resource.

What we Learned

This was a very insightful experience in many different aspects. One of which was definitely our understanding of different code languages such as HTML and Python. Despite having a beginner understanding coming into this Hackathon, leaving the building we feel a lot more confident when it comes to dealing with this type of content. We are studying Cybersecurity currently, but looking at a different topic when it comes to informational technology, it was really interesting and made us realize how open and broad IT really is and the capabilities for IT, business, society, and the real world to collaborate.

Future of Edison Eco

We plan on developing more articles by using databases to provide data for other regions. We also want to experiment with different softwares or programs so we can improve the UI and functionality into a more modern site. When we first developed Edison Eco, we wanted it to be more like a actual repository or database and be purely organized data. We also want to develop a system which predicts the state of a region or area in terms of climate change. This will be predicted off the current climate change rate of that area as well as the efforts made by different organizations or governments to take action. Based off this we will determine different factors changing in society which will affect individuals or groups directly in terms of health and financially.
