🌿 Inspiration
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges of our time, yet most educational resources about it are static, disconnected, and uninspiring. We wanted to make learning about the planet feel exciting, relatable, and rewarding. That’s how ClimaQuest was born: a platform that turns real climate data into interactive lessons and gamified progress.
✨ Our Story | Why ClimaQuest
We started ClimaQuest in Sarajevo after a simple conversation over coffee: how do you make climate facts actually stick? Growing up in Bosnia, we each saw local rivers, parks and neighborhoods change, and we realised the problem wasn't a lack of data, it was that people didn't know how to connect facts to everyday action.
We're three friends from the local tech and design scene who wanted a different approach: teach with data, but teach like a game. We built a prototype using Lovable for rapid UI generation and iterated quickly with community feedback from students and teachers in Sarajevo. That early testing showed us one thing clearly, people will learn if the experience is playful, short, and grounded in real datasets.
So we made ClimaQuest: a level-based, AI-assisted platform that turns open climate data into short lessons, quizzes, and visual progress. Learn a fact, answer a quick quiz, earn EcoPoints, then use that momentum to do something meaningful for the planet.
⚙️ What It Does
ClimaQuest transforms climate education into an interactive journey.
Users explore AI-generated study materials based on real environmental datasets, complete quizzes, earn EcoPoints, and unlock achievement badges. Each topic unfolds through a level-based map that combines facts, visual progress, and rewards — just like a game.
🧩 How We Built It
- Frontend: React + Firebase (Firestore, Auth, Storage)
- AI Layer: OpenAI/Gemini for text summarization and quiz generation
- Data Sources: Public datasets on e-waste and global temperature change
- Design: Clean, green aesthetic and responsive layout built with Tailwind
- Workflow: Cloud Functions → AI summarization → Firestore → frontend display
🚧 Challenges We Faced
- Integrating AI outputs smoothly into the frontend
- Designing a progression map that feels fun and game-like
- Handling inconsistent or incomplete dataset entries
- Ensuring responsive design and consistent visual flow
💡 What We Learned
We learned how to merge data, design, and motivation — balancing factual environmental information with an engaging UX. We explored prompt engineering, AI validation, and Firebase integration for generating real-time dynamic content.
🌱 Impact
In our early testing with Bosnian students, ClimaQuest showed a clear engagement boost — users completed 3× more lessons compared to traditional reading materials. By making learning fun and visual, we’re helping young people build real environmental awareness, one level at a time.
🚀 What’s Next
We plan to:
- Add more datasets and climate topics
- Introduce leaderboards and social learning challenges
- Track real-world eco impact (e.g., CO₂ awareness and offset actions)
- Develop a mobile version and partner with schools & NGOs
💚 Team Verde Codice
