What inspired me : I didn't read about this problem in a report. I saw it. Gym owners in my neighborhood in Dakar were managing hundreds of members with paper notebooks, collecting cash at the door, and losing money every single day because expired memberships went undetected. 30% of monthly revenue gone. No dashboard. No receipts. No visibility. I looked for a solution. Mindbody: $130/month, English only, no Wave, no Orange Money. Glofox: same story. Nothing built for us. Nothing that understood that our customers pay with mobile money, communicate on WhatsApp, and use basic Android phones on 3G connections. So I built it myself. At 15. From Dakar.
What I learned: Building ClicSal taught me that the hardest part of a startup isn't the code it's the conviction to keep going when no one is watching. I learned that product-market fit in emerging markets isn't about features. It's about friction. Every unnecessary step, every field in English, every payment method that isn't Wave or Orange Money is a reason for a customer to walk away. I also learned to sell. Cold-walking into gyms, demoing on the owner's phone on the spot, converting on the first visit. CAC: $0. Conversion: real.
How I built it: ClicSal is a web-based SaaS application no download, no installation, works on any smartphone from any browser. Core architecture: Full-stack web application optimized for low-bandwidth environments QR code generation and scanning for member access control Wave & Orange Money payment integration (mobile money rails native to West Africa) WhatsApp Business API for automated invoice generation and delivery Real-time dashboard: revenue, active members, present today, unpaid alerts Auto-blocking logic for expired memberships Multi-manager access with role-based permissions Financial reporting module (monthly/annual exports) Every line of code written alone. No team. No budget. No shortcuts.
Challenges I faced:
- Being 15 in a room full of adults. Gym owners don't take you seriously until the product is open on their phone and they see their revenue dashboard in real time. I learned to lead with the demo, not the pitch.
- Payment integration without official API access. Official Wave and Orange Money API partnerships require business registration I don't yet have. I built workarounds that work and official integrations are next on the roadmap once incorporated.
- Building and studying simultaneously. ClicSal was built between classes, on weekends, late at night. Time is the real constraint when you're a full-time student running a full-time startup.
- Zero funding, zero network, zero template. No accelerator. No mentor. No example of someone who looked like me doing this before me. I figured it out anyway.
