Building Cleft: a scribe to help those who think differently capture their thoughts

I (Justin) met Jonny during the pandemic. We were both building remote work startups. I was working on a voice tool for teams called Yac, and Jonny was developing a VR remote workspace. We bonded over the challenges of communication, especially for the neurodivergent community and edge-case users. We both felt there was still potential in the voice space, and Jonny wanted to create something by us and for us. After months of discussions, I started prototyping an early version of Cleft. The early versions received great feedback from thousands of users, with even The Verge calling it the best voice notes app they had ever used. This convinced us to go all in.

Tyler joined the founding team, having previously worked with me at Yac, and is the host of our podcast “Speak Easy”, where we discuss communication, productivity systems, capturing our thoughts, and how we share those thoughts with our future selves and others.

We saw a need for a system that worked for our brains, not just what was already on the market. Technology improvements have made this type of product finally possible, especially as AI has improved.

We see an opportunity for a tool that integrates well with other systems like Obsidian, Notion, Evernote and Apple Notes - whatever your system is. Our goal was to create a capture tool for people who think differently, not to replace existing systems.
