Inspiration

Contrails make up quite a large percentage of air pollution in the airline industry, according to research last year from Imperial.

What it does

Our web app optimizes flight paths based on the presence of contrails to reduce the greenhouse effects of airlines producing contrails.

How we built it

We preprocessed climate data to find areas of low temperature / high humidity and create flight paths to avoid these areas. We compare the flight path against the shortest route and output details.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into many integration problems, especially since we were collaborating on different features, and we needed to combine them into a single project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

A clean UI that's easy to read and understandable for airline companies.

What we learned

We learned best practices for using git, new modeling techniques for weather / climate data.

What's next for ClearSky

We would like to integrate with more sophisticated pathfinding algorithms, and consider more weather datapoints so we wouldn't have to rely on interpolation as much.
