Inspiration
Cognitive overload has become a common part of modern digital life. People constantly switch between tasks, notifications, and responsibilities, which quietly builds mental pressure throughout the day. The problem is that this pressure is mostly invisible until people are already overwhelmed. We were inspired to explore how technology could help people become aware of those early signals before they reach burnout. Instead of focusing on productivity, we wanted to design a tool that helps people better understand and protect their attention.
What it does
ClearMind helps users detect when they are approaching cognitive overload and provides simple tools to help them reset before burnout occurs. The system estimates attention pressure by analyzing signals such as task switching, interruptions, and accumulating tasks. It translates these signals into a clear attention status that shows whether a user’s cognitive load is stable, increasing, or approaching overload risk. When pressure rises, the app offers tools like a structured brain dump and task triage system to help users clear mental clutter and regain focus.
How we built it
We designed ClearMind as a mobile-first experience using Figma Make to prototype the interface and interaction flows. The product focuses on translating complex cognitive signals into simple, intuitive feedback that users can understand at a glance. We designed key screens including the home dashboard, reset tools, signal insights, and long-term attention trends. The interface prioritizes calm visual design and minimal cognitive friction so that the product itself does not contribute to overload.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was designing a system that communicates cognitive overload without overwhelming the user with data. Many productivity and tracking tools rely on dashboards and metrics, which can add even more cognitive load. We had to rethink how information should be visualized so that users receive meaningful signals without needing to interpret complex analytics. Another challenge was translating an abstract concept like mental saturation into interactions that feel intuitive and helpful.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that we were able to turn an abstract and difficult-to-measure concept like cognitive overload into a clear, user-centered experience. The final design focuses on simplicity, clarity, and emotional comfort, making the tool feel supportive rather than analytical. We also created a cohesive flow that moves from detecting rising cognitive pressure to helping users actively reduce it through simple in-app interactions.
What we learned
This project taught us how challenging it is to design for invisible human experiences like attention and cognitive load. We learned that when designing tools for mental wellbeing, simplicity and clarity are critical. We also learned the importance of designing interventions that help users act on insights rather than just presenting data.
What's next for ClearMind
In the future, ClearMind could integrate with real behavioral signals such as device activity patterns, notification frequency, and wearable data to improve the accuracy of cognitive load detection. We would also explore more personalized interventions and adaptive recommendations that evolve based on each user’s habits and attention patterns. Ultimately, the goal is to help people build healthier relationships with their attention and reduce the risk of burnout in increasingly demanding digital environments.
