Mental health is a silent crisis affecting millions worldwide. With 1 in 5 adults experiencing mental illness each year, yet therapy costing $100-200 per session, millions are left without support. We witnessed friends and family struggle with anxiety and depression, unable to afford professional help or too stigmatized to seek it.
We asked ourselves: What if everyone could have access to empathetic mental health support 24/7, completely free, with complete privacy?
That's when we realized the power of AI - specifically Google's Gemini 2.0. We could create a companion that's always available, never judges, and costs nothing. ClearMind was born from the belief that mental wellness should be a right, not a privilege.

😤 Challenges we ran into
1. Gemini API Context Management
Challenge: Maintaining conversation context across multiple turns while keeping prompts concise.
Solution: Implemented a sliding window approach that passes only the last 4 messages to Gemini, balancing context awareness with API token limits.

2. Auth0 Localhost Configuration
Challenge: Auth0 required HTTPS for "Initiate Login URI" even in development.
Solution: Discovered we could leave the field empty for localhost development, enabling seamless local testing without SSL certificates.
3. Snowflake Authentication
Challenge: Snowflake SDK requires specific credential formats, and we needed to support multiple auth methods (password, private key, PAT).
Solution: Built a flexible authentication system that auto-detects available credentials and falls back gracefully to mock mode for demos.
4. Real-time Mood Detection
Challenge: Extracting mood from unstructured text responses while maintaining natural conversation flow.
Solution: Engineered prompts to return structured JSON with both mood and reply, then handled parsing failures gracefully with fallbacks.
5. Privacy vs. Analytics Balance
Challenge: Users want privacy, but also want insights from their data.
Solution: All data stays local (localStorage), with optional explicit export to Snowflake only when user chooses. No automatic data transmission.
6. Mobile Responsiveness with Animations
Challenge: Smooth animations on mobile while maintaining performance.
Solution: Used CSS transforms and GPU acceleration, tested on multiple devices, implemented responsive breakpoints at 768px and 480px.
