Inspiration
We were inspired by how difficult it’s become to tell objective reporting from biased or misleading news online.
What it does
Our Chrome extension analyzes news articles for bias, emotional language, misinformation risk, and source credibility to produce a clear bias score.
How we built it
We built it using NLP techniques, source analysis, and a weighted scoring system integrated into a Chrome extension with Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was balancing simplicity in 1 score of how bias an article is, with in depth analysis and scoring to determine exactly how bias an article is.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We learned how to turn complex data and models into simple, actionable insights that encourage critical thinking rather than telling users what to believe.
What we learned
We learned how to combine technical models with clear explanations so users can understand and trust how bias and misinformation are detected.
What's next for ClearLens
We want to continue to work on bias analysis, and focus more on social media, especially with teens being exposed to millions of bias, misinforming, and false political videos, which influence the population greatly. We would hope to start working with analyzing short-form videos realtime to flag bias ratings.
