Inspiration
Living in The Bahamas, obtaining fair and upfront quotes from service providers and contractors isn’t always easy, especially as a consumer. I was inspired to build a tool that promotes pricing transparency. The goal was to empower everyday homeowners to understand what a job should realistically cost, while also encouraging contractors to provide more fair and consistent quotes.
What it does
ClearEstimate allows users to upload or snap a photo of their repair or renovation issue, ranging from a sparking outlet to a cracked tile. Within seconds, the app uses AI to analyze the image and job description, then generates an instant price estimate based on local labor rates and material costs. Each quote includes a breakdown to help users understand why it costs what it does, not just what it costs.
How we built it
The app was built using Bolt, with modularity in mind. I started by clearly defining the use case, then tackled each feature as a separate module to keep the codebase organized and scalable.
ClearEstimate integrates:
- GitHub for version control,
- Supabase for backend and cloud services,
- Netlify for hosting and deployment, and
- Entri to connect the app to a live domain.
Together, these tools helped accelerate development and deliver a polished, production-ready MVP.
Challenges we ran into
- Bolt occasionally lost context across iterations, requiring revisits and rewrites of several modules more than once.
- The biggest hurdle, though, was data. There’s no centralized or reliable source for contractor labor rates or material costs in The Bahamas. That meant we had to make our best approximations using regional benchmarks and anecdotal data. However, this is something we plan to refine in future versions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Market relevance: A local app was recently released that allows contractors to bid on home-service jobs. ClearEstimate adds value by helping consumers understand and evaluate those bids with confidence.
- First-to-market potential: There's currently no other app in The Bahamas, and possibly the region, offering this level of AI-powered, instant home-service pricing. ClearEstimate could be one of the first, and it's highly scalable.
What we learned
If you think creatively and challenge the status quo, there’s no limit to what you can build. The home-service industry, particularly construction, has numerous underserved pain points. This project opened our eyes to the value that can be delivered with tools like ClearEstimate.
What's next for ClearEstimate
- Expand service categories beyond construction to cover more aspects of home services.
- Introduce a Contractor Dashboard, enabling service pros to create white-labeled estimates directly within the platform.
- Integrate with the local bidding app to give consumers a seamless experience from quote to contractor selection.
- Polish and scale the current feature set to achieve enterprise readiness and prepare for commercial rollout.
- Expand to other countries and regions once we've adequately covered The Bahamas.
