Inspiration
People often know how they want their workspace to feel: minimal, cozy, or productive, and sometimes struggle to turn that vision into reality. ClearDesk was created to help users visualize their preferred vibe and provide achievable steps to create it.
What it does
Users upload a photo of their desk and select a Minimalist, Cozy, or Productivity vibe. ClearDesk then generates:
- A suggested preview of the desk with the selected vibe
- A personalized organization score
- Observations about clutter, layout, safety, and ergonomics
- A prioritized checklist with saved progress
- Project history for reopening or deleting previous transformations The app preserves the user’s real furniture, electronics, personal items, and work materials while reorganizing the space and adding only what supports the chosen vibe.
How we built it
ClearDesk uses Next.js, React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS. The OpenAI Responses API analyzes each photo using structured outputs, and OpenAI image editing generates the transformed preview. Neon PostgreSQL and Drizzle ORM store organization rules, visual style profiles, project history, generated results, and checklist progress. Browser-side image preparation reduces upload size before analysis.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was changing the desk’s vibe without creating an entirely different room. Early results could remove useful objects or add unnecessary decorations. We solved this by identifying protected belongings, preserving the original layout and lighting, limiting and constraining new objects, and grounding every visual change in the selected style profile.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Three distinct, structured desk vibes
- Practical recommendations connected to the visual result
- Interactive checklist progress
- Saved project history without requiring an account
- Privacy-conscious storage that does not save uploaded photos
What we learned
We learned that personalization requires more than applying an aesthetic filter. The AI must understand what already exists, what matters to the user, and what should remain unchanged. Combining structured scene analysis with tightly controlled image editing made the results more consistent, personal, and achievable.
What's next for ClearDesk
We want to add custom vibes, before-and-after comparisons, smarter progress tracking, and recommendations for bedrooms, study spaces, workshops, and other personal environments.
