Inspiration

Employment contracts can be difficult to understand, especially for migrant workers, low-literacy workers, people working in a second language, and workers unfamiliar with the legal system where they are employed. A signature can show agreement, but not necessarily understanding.

What it does

ClearContract creates a plain-language companion to an employment contract while leaving the original contract unchanged and authoritative. It identifies and explains key clauses such as pay, working hours, duties, leave, deductions, termination, and other important terms. Each explanation is traceable back to the relevant clause in the original contract.

ClearContract also adds a rights-information layer. Based on the worker's jurisdiction and employment context, the system can retrieve relevant open, authoritative sources such as labour legislation, government guidance, ILO resources, and human-rights publications. It can then highlight potential areas that may need clarification or professional review without claiming to replace legal advice.

Finally, ClearContract produces a signable Contract Understanding Record that can be attached to the original contract. It records which major terms were explained, which rights information was provided, and whether questions or unclear clauses were identified. Both parties can acknowledge that the explanatory document was reviewed while confirming that it does not amend, override, or replace the original contract.

Why it matters

Workers can be placed at a disadvantage when complex language, unfamiliar legal terminology, language barriers, or unequal bargaining power make it difficult to understand what they are signing. ClearContract aims to make informed contractual consent more practical and verifiable while preserving the legal integrity of the original agreement.

How technology enables the solution

AI and natural-language processing are used to extract contract clauses, classify important terms, generate plain-language explanations, and link each explanation back to its source clause. Retrieval from authoritative open legal and human-rights sources helps ground the rights-information layer. Document hashing/versioning can link every explanatory record to a specific version of the original contract so that changes require a new explanation record.

Key features

  • Plain-language contract companion
  • Clause-by-clause traceability to the original document
  • Multilingual explanations
  • Jurisdiction-aware rights-information retrieval from open authoritative sources
  • Potential-conflict and clarification flags rather than definitive legal judgments
  • Signable Contract Understanding Record
  • Version/hash linkage between original contract and companion document
  • Original contract remains unchanged and authoritative

Target users

Primary beneficiaries include migrant workers, low-literacy workers, workers using a second language, informal and lower-wage workers, and others who may face information or bargaining disadvantages. Employers, recruiters, worker-support organizations, unions, NGOs, and legal-aid services could also use the system to improve transparency.

Potential impact

ClearContract could improve workers' understanding of employment terms before signing, reduce misunderstandings, expose unclear or concerning clauses earlier, and create a verifiable record that important contractual terms were explained. At scale, it could support fairer recruitment and employment practices while helping employers demonstrate clearer communication.

Feasibility and implementation

A first version could accept uploaded PDF or DOCX employment contracts, extract structured clauses, generate simplified explanations, retrieve jurisdiction-specific authoritative sources, and export a companion PDF containing the explanation and acknowledgement record. Human legal review would be used for high-risk or uncertain cases. The system could later expand to additional jurisdictions, languages, worker categories, and organization workflows.

Challenges and limitations

Employment law varies across jurisdictions and worker classifications, and authoritative sources can change. AI-generated interpretations may also be incomplete or incorrect. ClearContract therefore should surface sources, confidence and uncertainty, avoid declaring clauses legal or illegal, preserve the original contract as authoritative, and encourage professional verification where necessary. Privacy and secure handling of employment documents would also be essential.

AI use in developing this submission

AI was used as a supporting tool to help structure the concept, compare possible feature designs, and improve the clarity of the written presentation. The core problem framing, solution direction, signable companion-document concept, and requirement that the system not contradict or replace the original contract were developed by the participant.
