Inspiration
Dental insurance can be difficult to understand, especially when patients are trying to figure out what is covered, which provider to choose, and how much a procedure may actually cost. We wanted to make that process clearer and give patients useful information before they receive care.
What it does
ClearCare is a dental insurance navigation platform that helps users understand and plan for dental care. Users can enter their insurance information, find and compare providers, translate complicated insurance terminology into plain language, and estimate their potential out-of-pocket costs. ClearCare also uses Monte Carlo simulation to show a range of possible costs rather than relying on a single estimate.
How we built it
We built the frontend with React and TypeScript and the backend with FastAPI and Python. The frontend provides a simple workflow for entering information and viewing results, while the backend handles provider data, insurance calculations, cost estimates, jargon translation, and simulations. We designed the different components to work together as one patient-focused experience.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was turning complicated insurance information into something useful and understandable. Cost estimates can vary depending on coverage, procedure, and provider, so we also had to determine how to communicate uncertainty instead of giving users false confidence in one number. Integrating our frontend, backend, provider information, and cost engine within the hackathon time limit was another major challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we created a working end-to-end application rather than just a prototype of one feature. ClearCare combines provider comparison, insurance explanations, cost estimation, and Monte Carlo simulation in one experience. We're especially proud of making uncertainty part of the cost estimate so users can see a realistic range of possible outcomes.
What we learned
We learned that building useful healthcare technology is not just about calculations. Information also needs to be understandable, transparent, and presented in a way that helps people make decisions. We also gained experience building and deploying a full-stack application as a team under a tight deadline.
What's next for ClearCare
Next, we would like to connect ClearCare to larger and more current provider and insurance datasets, improve the accuracy of our cost models, and support more insurance plans and procedures. We would also like to personalize recommendations further and eventually expand the platform beyond dental care. Our long-term goal is for ClearCare to become a tool that helps people understand the financial side of healthcare before they receive treatment.
