Inspiration

In film and television production, creative vision constantly collides with legal reality. Before major streaming platforms (Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime) or theatrical financiers accept delivery of a film, producers must bind Errors & Omissions (E&O) Insurance.

Underwriters will not issue an E&O policy without an exhaustive, verified Chain-of-Title and Script Clearance Binder. A single un-cleared commercial song playing from a car radio, an accidental logo in a hero shot, or filming at an identifiable municipal landmark without a commercial permit can result in:

  • $50,000–$100,000+ emergency reshoots during color grading or post-production.
  • Distribution injunctions and cease-and-desists for trademark dilution or copyright infringement.
  • Weeks of tedious manual legal legwork cross-referencing Performing Rights Organizations (PROs), corporate clearance desks, and municipal permit offices.

We built CLEARANCE to solve this high-stakes bottleneck across the pre-production and delivery pipeline—automating weeks of clearance attorney research into seconds of trustworthy, agentic intelligence.

What It Does

CLEARANCE is an autonomous multi-agent rights intelligence platform designed for screenwriters, line producers, clearance coordinators, and entertainment attorneys:

  1. Screenplay Ingestion & Multi-Domain Entity Extraction: Ingests scripts (PDF, DOCX, TXT) into an authentic typewriter screenplay interface and isolates candidates across 8 legal domains:

    • 🎵 Music & Audio: Master recording vs. Sync publishing rights.
    • 🏷️ Trademarks & Brands: Prominent commercial logos and storefronts.
    • 📱 Consumer Products & Props: Devices, automotive models, and nominative fair use props.
    • 🏛️ Municipal Locations & Landmarks: Public parks, civic architecture, and commercial filming permits.
    • 📺 Archival Media & Broadcasts: News networks, sports footage, and documentary clips.
    • 👤 Living Persons & Estates: Rights of publicity, likeness releases, and defamation exposure.
    • 🦸 Fictional Studio IP & Characters: Third-party cinematic universes and verbal allusions.

  2. Cost-Aware Autonomous Research Planning: Instead of naively querying search engines for every entity, the agent assigns selective investigation depth (DEEP, TARGETED, or HEURISTIC). It avoids wasting query quota on standard incidental consumer props (applying nominative fair use doctrine) while focusing deep multi-angle queries on high-liability assets.

  3. Live Web Grounding via Parallel Search API: Queries real-world Performing Rights Organizations (ASCAP, BMI, PRS, COSON), municipal filming permit fee schedules, and corporate brand clearance portals in real time, retrieving verified source URLs and clickable citations.

  4. Transparent Legal Deduction Chain (Fact vs. Inference vs. Unknown): Rejects black-box hallucination by presenting an explicit 4-part legal deduction chain:

    • CLAIM: Exact statutory or copyright liability assertion.
    • DISCOVERED EVIDENCE: Verifiable citations retrieved live by Parallel Search.
    • DEDUCTIVE REASONING CHAIN: Step-by-step logic connecting script context to legal doctrine.
    • AUDIT CONCLUSION: Final risk rating with a grounded pricing tier.

  5. Production Fixer with 4 Remediation Pathways:

    • Option A (Clear Rights): Pre-drafts a formal Rights Inquiry & Clearance Request letter.
    • Option B (Royalty-Free): Curates pre-cleared, low-cost commercial library alternatives.
    • Option C (AI Generation Prompt): Generates a tailored multimodal generation prompt (Google Lyria/Imagen/Gemini) for an original synthetic replacement.
    • Option D (Script Rewrite): Rewrites the scene to eliminate legal exposure while preserving dramatic tone, complete with an inline visual diff comparison.

  6. Interactive "Ask CLEARANCE" Assistant & Binder Export: Filmmakers can interrogate the specific legal evidence behind any flagged item, then export an audit-ready, printable HTML and Markdown Chain-of-Title dossier for insurance underwriters.

How We Built It

CLEARANCE is architected as an autonomous 5-agent crew:

  • Google Agent Platform & Gemini:
    • Powered by the modern google-genai SDK and Gemini 3.6 Flash.
    • Handles screenplay parsing, structured JSON schema extraction, 3-step deductive legal reasoning, script rewrite generation, and the interactive Q&A assistant.
  • Parallel Partner Integration (parallel-web):
    • Actively integrated at runtime using the official parallel-web Python SDK (from parallel import AsyncParallel).
    • Executes live search queries formulated by the Autonomous Research Planner against online rights registries, corporate clearance desks, and municipal permit guidelines.
  • Backend Architecture:
    • Built with Python 3.11 and FastAPI, utilizing asynchronous Server-Sent Events (SSE) to stream live multi-agent telemetry directly to the frontend.
    • SQLite transactional persistence for projects, screenplay entities, evidence citations, and remediation options.
  • Frontend Design:
    • Custom cinematic obsidian UI (#090D16 palette with amber film accents).
    • Authentic typewriter screenplay workspace with Courier Prime typography, live telemetry stream, and interactive slide-over drawer.
  • Containerization & Hosting:
    • Production-ready deployment containerized with Docker and live hosted on Render.

Challenges We Ran Into

  1. LLM Copyright Hallucinations: General-purpose LLMs frequently hallucinate music publishers, catalog splits, or brand clearance procedures because corporate ownership changes constantly. We solved this by pairing Gemini’s reasoning with live web grounding via the Parallel Search API, forcing the model to cite real source URLs before rendering an assessment.
  2. Balancing Thoroughness with API Quotas: In an 80-page screenplay, searching every prop is slow and costly. We built the Research Planner Agent to act as a cost-aware triage layer, determining whether an item warrants a deep search, a targeted search, or heuristic nominative fair use resolution.
  3. Structured Legal Epistemology: Filmmakers and insurance underwriters do not trust generic "confidence scores." We had to engineer a strict prompt schema that enforces transparent legal epistemology: separating immutable facts (citations) from legal inferences and explicitly labeling unresolved items as NEEDS HUMAN REVIEW.

  • The 8-Trap Benchmark Screenplay (The Neon Syndicate): An engineered stress-test screenplay covering all 8 clearance traps (commercial music, electronics, social media UI, branded apparel, archival broadcasts, municipal parks, billboards, and studio IP) that can be loaded and verified with one click.
  • Zero-Hallucination Pricing Status: Replaced arbitrary dollar predictions with grounded statuses: Commercial Quote Required, Statutory Permit Schedule, or Royalty-Free Substitute Available.
  • Real-Time Telemetry Stream: A live console in the UI that makes the agentic division of labor visible, showing every Parallel search query and Gemini reasoning step in real time.

What We Learned

  • Agentic Division of Labor Beats Monolithic Prompts: Splitting the workflow into dedicated specialist agents (Analyst $\rightarrow$ Planner $\rightarrow$ Parallel Researcher $\rightarrow$ Risk Reasoner $\rightarrow$ Production Fixer) dramatically reduced hallucinations and produced professional-grade legal analyses that a single prompt could never match.
  • Live Grounding is Essential for Entertainment Workflows: Real-time rights intelligence cannot exist without live web discovery. Parallel Search proved indispensable in finding current licensing channels, PRO databases, and municipal film offices.
