Inspiration
When I created my GitHub account, right under the Create Account button in a tiny font was a link to GitHub's Terms of service. I, like every other person I have ever met, ignored it figuring it couldn't be that bad and not wanting to read 30 pages of legalese. But what we don't know is that clauses in these Terms of service can be incredibly malicious.
What it does
Our Clear Terms extension analyzes clauses in a website's terms of service using AI to categorize each of them based on potential risks. It provides an overall breakdown and explanation on concerning causes.
How we built it
Clear Terms is built with Python for the backend and Javascript, HTML, and CSS for the user interface. We utilized AI to efficiently create out project.
Challenges we ran into
Our model ran into challenges of taking too long to generate a breakdown of the Terms of Service and providing an inaccurate analysis of certain clauses.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of making a coherent product that could actually be used by people.
What we learned
We learned the importance of working together and utilizing AI effectively in order to make a useful product.
What's next for Clear Terms
In the future, we would like to explore analyzing a user's digital footprint overall and analyzing other documents filled with legalese.
