🌍 Inspiration

Communication should bring people together, not separate them because they speak different languages or interact with the world differently.

Imagine travelling to another country and struggling to communicate with a local. Meeting someone who speaks a language you don't understand. Trying to follow a conversation when hearing isn't an option. Or wanting to communicate confidently without constantly reaching for a dictionary.

These everyday situations inspired ClearCommit: a real-time, two-way voice interpretation assistant designed to make conversations more accessible, natural, and understandable.

💡 What It Does

ClearCommit helps people communicate across language barriers by translating conversations in both directions. Rather than translating only what one person says, the goal is to help both sides understand each other.

That opens up possibilities beyond ordinary translation:

  • Travel: Communicate with locals, ask for directions, order food, and navigate unfamiliar places.
  • Everyday conversations: Connect with people who speak different languages without needing to know each other's language fluently.
  • Accessibility: Make spoken conversations easier to follow through readable text transcripts, which can help Deaf and hard-of-hearing people when the relevant captioning features are available and working.
  • Learning and confidence: Understand unfamiliar expressions and communicate more naturally.
  • Professional communication: Help people participate in conversations across language barriers, including meetings and international discussions.

For blind and low-vision users, spoken translations could also be useful when paired with accessible screen-reader support and audio controls. Accessibility is an important direction for the project, although it requires deliberate design and testing rather than translation alone.

🛠️ How We Built It

ClearCommit is a Python-based desktop application designed around real-time speech processing. Its pipeline combines speech recognition, language-model-powered translation, and text-to-speech generation to help both participants understand one another.

The project integrates speech-processing and AI services, with a desktop interface for managing the conversation and audio workflow. The focus is on making the technology useful during an actual conversation, rather than simply translating isolated text.

🧩 Challenges

Real-time interpretation is more complicated than translating a sentence. Speech recognition can struggle with background noise, distant microphones, unclear pronunciation, and overlapping speech. Translation must preserve meaning, while generated speech needs to arrive quickly enough to keep a conversation flowing.

Balancing accuracy, latency, audio quality, and usability has been a central challenge. The project also highlights why a useful communication assistant needs more than a powerful AI model: it needs a reliable pipeline and an interface that people can understand and control.

📚 What We Learned

Building ClearCommit reinforced how many separate systems must work together to make real-time AI useful. Speech recognition, translation, audio generation, device handling, and the user interface all affect the experience.

We also learned to think beyond the model itself. The real measure of success is whether someone can use the application to understand another person more easily.

🚀 What's Next

The longer-term vision is to make ClearCommit more accessible, reliable, and useful in real-world conversations.

Potential improvements include better captioning and accessibility controls, stronger handling of noisy environments, more natural translations, support for additional languages, and communication assistance that helps users understand idioms, tone, and ambiguous statements.

Ultimately, ClearCommit aims to make language less of a barrier to travel, relationships, work, and everyday human connection.

The goal is simple: help people understand each other, wherever they are and whatever language they speak.
