Inspiration

Pollution is a common topic among environmental issues. We wanted a way for the community to come together, and take more initiative in caring for our land.

How could we motivate them? Offering community service hours for high school graduates, maybe juveniles, and offer part-time jobs for those.

On the news as of recent, CNE reported that around 37,000 applicants showed up to their job fair looking for a job. Only around 5,000 positions are available. In comparison to last year's 18,000, this is over two times as much.

As many can probably relate, finding even a minimum-wage job in Toronto is as difficult as ever. We believe that by offering some sort of earnings for cleaning up our streets, we can help the job insecurity and prevent pollution.

What it does

A community based application where users can vote for locations that they believe requires the most cleaning. Users can submit cleaning claims on areas they've cleaned.

How we built it

Eclipse & Visual Studio Code - Java, JavaFX for the GUI

Challenges we ran into

Coming up with a code solution within our technical abilities. Connecting the back-end code to the GUI. The uncomfortable chairs at the DCC and dealing with our sore limbs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Engaging in social activities with other Hackers. Learning a new concept, JavaFX. Being able to come up with a Java project from scratch. Being able to finish our project plan at all!

What we learned

Obviously, there are technical gaps in between our abilities and the skills required to properly execute a more detailed and viable application. We had to simplify our project significantly, but at least we have a slightly better gauge on what kind of skills we should better at if we wanted to complete this project in its entirety.

What's next for CleanScapes

Get funding from the government.

Hire some sort of trash collection site where you can bring in trash bags to confirm you've cleaned an area up. In terms of how we could identify whether or not the trash is actually from the street and not their own homes, a bit difficult to think of a solution for that at the moment after sleeping only about 4 hours within the span of 40 hours.
