Inspiration

The climate crisis is one of the foremost issues plaguing our society. To assure the safety and vitality of future generations, environmentally conscious decisions must be made at all levels. Every decision we make affects the future of our planet and a large part of this is how we consume energy. Specifically, this comes into play primarily when considering the greenhouse gasses emitted from energy generation and fossil fuels. Greenhouse gas emissions from transportation account for about 28 percent of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, making it the largest contributor to U.S. GHG emissions. This inspired us to create a website that tackles this issue, encouraging users to be more mindful of their transportation while still being safe and realistic.

What it does

CleanCommute is a website that helps users make decisions about their transportation. Sometimes, the cleanest and most environmentally friendly route is not the easiest to make. CleanCommute helps solve this by analyzing how commute routes and providing the use with their options and how they vary based on their sustainability.

How we built it

We tested out a lot of different options when it came to figuring out how to implement our idea and solution. Largely we used a lot of Figma and Google Maps. We were able to use the skills that we gained from the MLH Figma Web Dev Workshop at this Hackathon to make this process easier for us. We used a lot of HTML, CSS, and JS for this. Coming up with details within our idea also took a lot of team work

Challenges we ran into

As first-time/new hackers or hackers with little-to-no experience, this Hackathon brought upon many challenges. We were not sure how to implement many of the ideas we had. Though we had a lot of ambition, at times, we lacked the skill to showcase our solutions. We struggled with converting the Figma into code for out site and adding an interactive map. This required a lot of trial and error but we ended up being able to solve it and enhance our site.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Figuring out how to integrate maps into our web app and coming up with an ecoscore calculation. This was truly a challenge as integrating applications into our site was newer to us, as beginners. Also, theoretically, understanding how we wanted to provide a score relating to different factors was also difficult.

What we learned

We have explored how to stylize elements in HTML and CSS, as well as how to integrate maps and map-related features into our web apps.

What's next for CleanCommute

We have high hopes for the future of this website. Our entire team has a wholehearted belief that this app is important and so is acting environmentally conscious. One idea we had is to create a mobile app version as well as features such as weather condition predictions or considerations for the safety of users. This would also make accessing this app easier on the go. We would also be interested in adding information about more natural disaster-related safety concerns or concerns about air quality and using that data to give the user better information about how their travels could look. Much of this idea was inspired by the need for this right now due to the current LA Fires.
