Clean Tax Reports

Inspiration

As a retail crypto investor, I grew frustrated with clunky tax tools that overcomplicated IRS reporting—especially for DeFi and NFTs, which most tools mishandled. I wanted a straightforward solution that spoke to everyday investors like me, no jargon or hidden fees.

What it does

CryptoTax Simplifier streamlines crypto tax reporting for US taxpayers. It calculates capital gains/losses via FIFO/LIFO/HIFO methods, classifies DeFi/NFT transactions per IRS rules, and generates downloadable, audit-ready reports compatible with top tax platforms—all at a flat $49 per tax year.

How we built it

I started by mapping IRS 2026 crypto tax guidelines to core features, then built a responsive React frontend for the dashboard. Backend logic in Node.js handled accounting method calculations, and I integrated TurboTax/CoinTracker APIs to align report formats with industry standards.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was ensuring accurate tax classification for niche DeFi/NFT events—IRS rules are vague here, so I had to cross-reference official guidance and industry best practices to avoid misclassification. Real-time calculation speed was also tricky; optimizing for instant updates across 30+ transactions took iterative testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a tool that’s both compliant and user-friendly—no advanced crypto or tax knowledge needed. The responsive design works flawlessly on mobile/desktop, and the tax loss harvesting recommendations provide tangible value for investors looking to reduce taxable income.

What we learned

I deepened my understanding of IRS crypto tax regulations and how accounting methods impact tax liability. I also learned to prioritize user experience in fintech—clarity and speed matter more than complex features for retail users.

What's next for this project

We plan to expand support for additional tax filing platforms, add more granular DeFi/NFT tax event categorization, and incorporate historical tax year data. Long-term, we’ll explore integrating real-time price data to keep calculations even more accurate for active traders.
