Inspiration
We were inspired due to all of us being environmentalists and Snigdha and Katelyn's beach clean up the day before the hackathon in which baby turtles were found, one of them due to choking on a piece of plastic, spurring us to action. We want to raise awareness for ocean and sea pollution as well as endangered animals.
What it does
This is a game in which you control your diver sprite to collect pieces of litter from the water. If you collect a turtle, you lose ten points but if you collect a piece of litter, you gain a point. These points can be used to feed your adopted endangered animal of choice in the Pets section of the game.
How we built it
We started with the programming language Snap! Berkeley. We knew we wanted levels and started with the first. After that, we built the next ones by adding more turtles.
Challenges we ran into
Debugging was difficult due to many components of the UI and the logistics of the game. Our computers sometimes crashed multiple times, losing our work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the smooth animation and graphics of the UI, as it took a while to figure out, but after much debugging and coffee, we finally got it to run smoothly.
What we learned
It is hard to work on a project in Snap as you can only have one person edit it at a time, making it very time-consuming and inefficient
What's next for Clean Seas
We plan on creating more programs to leverage the power of computers and programming to help raise awareness for the environment and endangered animals!
