Inspiration
Imagine getting home after a ten-hour workday and realising you still have to pick up your clothes from the laundry shop. Your body is giving up. But then you realise that you also have laundry to do. You could do it yourself or walk to the laundry, but your body has the energy for neither. What do you do?
We noticed that young corporate employees, workaholics, and office-going bachelors seldom get the time and energy to do their own laundry or take it to a dry cleaner. As a result, unwashed laundry keeps piling up. Older people without caretakers also face challenges with their laundry.
We aim to get rid of that friction.
clean was built on a simple premise: to make it easier for people to find, compare, order, and track local laundry services without having to make an extra trip.
What it does
clean is an on-demand platform for urban laundry that links customers with local laundry services.
For customers
- Compare stores without hassle: Compare different laundry providers and their prices without walking over to every store.
- Choose services as needed: Select the number of individual items, such as shirts and pants, and view an estimated total before finalising your order.
- Order tracking: Keep up with the progress of your orders.
For store owners
- Account access: Laundry owners have their own account and can log in.
- Manage listings: Owners can manage orders, keep their laundry details up to date and modify the prices of their services.
- Receive orders: Orders placed with a store show up on the owner's page.
How we built it
The frontend of the application uses Next.js, React, and Tailwind CSS. Supabase PostgreSQL stores the structured data relating to laundries, pricing, customers, and orders, while Drizzle ORM serves as the database layer.
Customers can choose individual types of garments, change the quantities, and instantly see the total price that results from their selections before moving on.
Challenges we ran into
One of our main challenges was designing for two different kinds of users in the same product.
Customers need a quick way to find a laundry and its prices, while laundry owners need control over their services, prices, order information, and operational status. We had to make sure both experiences were simple without the platform becoming two separate products.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Customer side: Customers can find laundry services, check the prices of individual items of clothing, choose how many items they want, and check their bill.
- Owner side: Laundry owners have their own account where they can manage their laundry details and update prices.
- Logistics model: Rather than setting up our own rider fleet at the start, we intend to work with existing delivery companies such as RedX or Steadfast. This lets us launch without bearing the cost of running a delivery fleet.
What's next for clean
Our launch will focus on young professionals working in Dhaka's corporate hubs, particularly Motijheel and Karwan Bazar.
Phase 1: Market penetration
- Let local laundries join without a platform commission.
- Customers pay the laundry's listed price together with the delivery charge via bKash.
- Drive customer adoption through pickup and return using RedX or Steadfast.
Phase 2: Monetisation
- Apply a commission of 10% to 15% to the laundry bill for digital order routing, payment management, and delivery coordination.
- Provide featured placement to laundry owners who wish to increase their visibility.
- Improve order tracking, reminders, and owner management.
Logistics
- Work with courier companies such as RedX and Steadfast for two-way collection and return.
- Use pickup points located in offices to cut down on unnecessary trips.
- As order density increases in the same buildings, combine multiple customers' deliveries where practical to reduce the delivery cost per customer.
Product development
- Add location-based laundry discovery using the Google Maps API.
- Add distance and price filters along with more advanced search.
- Eventually expand to other cities in the country.
