Inspiration
We wanted to simplify complex legal documents, such as privacy policies, terms of service, or contract clauses. A lot of time we skim over these texts without fully understanding what they mean, because they are written in complex language. Generally you have to go to a lawyer to help understand what it means. We wanted to make that more accessible and super easy to understand.
What it does
It's an AI-powered Chrome extension that is able to analyze webpages, or PDF files and gives it a risk score, while also noting red flags, yellow flags, and green flags. You also get negotiation advice so you understand what you can do about these issues and your rights.
How we built it
We built it using HTML, JavaScript, and the Gemini API. We would occasionally ask AI to help us understand the tools we had available, and then formulated a plan to achieve our goals.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we ran into was getting a consistent response. We had to create a specialized prompt to get the kind of answer we needed, while also tuning model values (temperature, probability values, etc) to favor consistent responses over more variation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we got to ship this so quickly, and the fact that it looks like a real extension with a good UI. We're also glad that we were able to learn things and have AI actually assist us instead of doing tasks for us.
What we learned
We learned a little bit about how browser extensions work and how to tune AI models to get the responses we need.
What's next for Clause and Effect
We'd add photo scanning, so you can get insights on physical legal documents too!
