Inspiration
One of our team members, Amber, spent 3 years running a volunteering organisation which tutors refugees in English online so that they can access better job and study opportunities. The work is vital, but the number of volunteers is never enough. With around 100 volunteers, Opportutoring still has a waitlist of 150 refugees who are still waiting for help with language practice.
The inspiration behind this Bot is to facilitate access to free and useful conversational language learning and practice for as many people as possible, so students never have to go on a waitlist to learn the language they depend on.
What it does
Claude Linguist makes learning new conversational languages easier, cheaper and more fun.
How we built it
This is an open-source project built around Telegram, allowing users to interact with Claude Linguist on-the-go. A server handles mediates messages between Telegram and Claude with carefully curated prompts to promote language learning and retention of new vocab. Linguist also responds to commands for extra features, such as a simplified news article for picking up some extra contexts and vocab.
What's next for Claude Linguist
Imagine if this worked in audio-based conversation too! We'd love Linguist to be useable as you're walking about, as if you're having a real conversation over the phone. This would also grant access to students in physical work with no free time to study to learn whilst on the job.
