Inspiration

In a world where financial inclusion is still a dream for billions, and existing payment systems are fragmented, expensive, and unreliable, we asked ourselves: What if payments could flow like messages—borderless, instant, and smart? Classy Cactus was born to challenge the dominance of card-based systems and bring seamless, resilient, non-card payments to the global stage—built for everyone, everywhere.

What it does

Classy Cactus is a cross-platform, offline-capable, AI-enhanced payment system that:

Enables non-card, real-time transactions across borders.

Works with aliases like @mama.kenya or phone numbers, not account numbers.

Supports offline payments via NFC, Bluetooth, or QR.

Uses AI for smart FX routing, fraud detection, and financial coaching.

Allows programmable payments (e.g., release funds after delivery).

Provides voice-activated interfaces and local-language UIs for low-literacy users.

Includes fallback communication via SMS or mesh networks during disasters.

How we built it

Frontend: React Native + Tailwind UI, with multilingual and offline-first design.

Backend: Node.js + Express, using PostgreSQL and Redis for fast payment state tracking.

AI Layer: Python-based services for smart routing and chat-based UX, powered by OpenAI + Whisper + HuggingFace models.

Blockchain Bridge: Implemented Stellar and stablecoin rails for cross-border clearing.

Offline P2P Layer: Web Bluetooth + QR fallback using local mesh routing logic.

Security: Biometric login via FIDO2 + real-time behavioral anomaly detection.

Challenges we ran into

Making real-time FX routing work with fluctuating markets.

Ensuring offline payments sync securely when reconnected.

Designing a UI usable by low-literacy users across cultures and regions.

Integrating decentralized identity with self-custodial wallets in a way that is intuitive.

Keeping costs near-zero for end users while handling cross-border logic.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Enabled offline-to-online cross-border payments using mesh + QR.

Built a smart alias system that maps to wallets or bank accounts globally.

Developed a no-literacy, voice-first UI that adapts to dialect and language in real-time.

Designed modular APIs that can plug into fintech, NGO, or disaster-relief use cases.

What we learned

Financial UX must be culturally adaptive and trust-driven, not just functional.

Offline-first thinking is key to reaching underserved regions.

AI can radically improve trust, speed, and inclusion—but only when explainable.

Identity and payments are inseparable in cross-border ecosystems.

Smart contracts can support new financial primitives—like conditional peer-to-peer transactions and savings groups.

What's next for Classy Cactus

Launching a pilot program in underserved rural and migrant corridors.

Expanding AI voice support to 15+ dialects using open-source models.

Partnering with local fintechs and aid orgs to power offline community payments.

Open-sourcing parts of our stack for developers building financial resilience tools.

Working on compliance-ready integrations (e.g., eKYC, CBDC plug-ins, AML modules).
