Inspiration

We considered creating projects that had to do with mental and/or physical health wellness and covid number trackers but decided that these ideas may be too common. We thought about something everyone in the team had in common, which was education. Having a project that can help a wider base was our goal, and we realized that we can help families and provide tools for research hits that mark.

What it does

During the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, many countries instituted lockdowns (general population restrictions, including orders to stay at home and work from home) to slow the rapid spread of the virus. Such measures have disrupted the normal functioning of schools and universities and necessitated the delivery of alternative methods for students and teachers to continue with their lessons. Our website is a platform where schools around the country can fill out a form detailing information on how they are still carrying on to provide education as the pandemic runs its course. Researchers are allowed to take advantage of these novel teaching systems to learn more about various education techniques that may impact how future generations will be learning even after the virus has cleared up. Families with children looking to move on to higher education or just transferring schools can utilize our database to have a collective list in one place rather than finding this information individually, which can be a hassle. They can also compare and contrast issues that matter to them and have a better understanding of specific school information.

How we built it

We used React.js to design the front end components of adding and viewing schools. Firebase was used as the primary database to store information.

Challenges we ran into

As new hackers, it was a new experience for us to work in a team. We are used to submitting projects individually in our classes. There was some miscommunication early on, however, we quickly overcame this hurdle after clearly organizing roles and designating what part of the website each team member was working on. This was also the first time our back-end developer worked with a database in a project, so it was very difficult adjusting to the new technologies.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As a group of friends already, we played to each others strengths and weaknesses really well and found out that different perspectives really have a large impact on the outcome of our project development. Having a functioning website and having it look nice as well as a very fulfilling feeling that we all shared and motivated us to do more in the future.

What we learned

It was our first time using React and Firebase and we spent some time before Friday to look up guides online so that we could create what we envisioned.

What's next for Classroom Covid

Given more time, we would love to add more statistical data in order to help researchers and families such as current Covid numbers in the school and maybe a GPA comparison to living on campus, commuting, and full remote learning. Having a tab to filter schools by the state is also something we would like to do. We would love to add authentication as well, where certain university admins can edit and add their own school. However, as of now, we have it open for the purpose of this hackathon.
