Inspiration
Educational success should not be determined by a student’s income. But today, access to personalized feedback, tutoring, and consistent academic support is still a luxury, especially in underfunded classrooms. The result? A systemic barrier to learning, graduation, and future economic opportunity.
We saw a clear gap in the market: Private tutoring and paid AI tools are expensive and inaccessible to the students who need them most. Additionally, most platforms focus on content delivery or promoting cheating, not feedback or learning from mistakes.
There's no all-in-one platform that both evaluates student work and guides their learning journey We were inspired to build ClassMate, as a direct response to this inequity. Our mission is to promote economic empowerment through education by giving every student access to high-quality, real-time feedback and adaptive practice - regardless of their background.
What it does
ClassMate is an AI-powered learning platform that helps students learn from their mistakes and empowers teachers to scale their support—all in one place.
Here’s what ClassMate does:
Automated Grading & Feedback: Students upload homework in PDF form, Our AI evaluates each response and detects mistakes, Real-time feedback is generated explaining the issue and how to fix it
Personalized, Unlimited Practice: For every mistake or concept, ClassMate generates similar questions with optional hints and solutions, Students can request new problems by tag (e.g., “U-substitution” or “World War II”), This creates a loop of learning, letting students improve through practice, not punishment
Classroom Analytics for Teachers: Teachers can view class-wide trends, set goals, performance breakdowns, and topic-level analytics (e.g. "The class is struggling on U-substitution"), Insights include mistake frequencies, histograms, mean/median scores, and standard deviation, Helps identify where entire classrooms or individuals are struggling
We built a fully functional MVP during the hackathon, which we’re proud to demo. The MVP includes AI-powered grading, personalized question generation, and real-time dashboards.
How we built it
For the backend API server, it was built with the Flask API framework and powered with OpenAI, Tesseract-OCR, and PDF2Image, or Poppler.
The front-end website was built using Next.JS with TailwindCSS, with some use of MaterialUI for fast prototyping. The main designs were done in Figma.
Challenges we ran into
Our biggest challenge was striking a balance between building a sustainable business and staying true to our mission of supporting low-income communities. From the beginning, we knew we wanted to create an affordable solution that everyone could easily access. However, this approach presented difficulties when considering our revenue model and investors who were more focused on rapid growth and high profit margins. Ultimately, we leaned into creative strategies, like pursuing grant partnerships, adopting a freemium model, and prioritizing features that minimize infrastructure costs. Our first priority was ensuring that our product was as accessible to students as possible. This allowed us to stay aligned with our social impact goals without compromising the financial stability needed to keep ClassMate growing. Balancing these priorities has been challenging, but we believe this approach is crucial to ensuring ClassMate reaches the students and teachers who need it most.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're incredibly proud of the progress we've made despite limited resources and significant challenges. We've successfully developed a functional MVP that delivers real-time feedback and personalized insights and created a list of investors to reach out to and secure funding from. Our innovative pricing model balances financial sustainability with affordability, ensuring underserved communities can benefit without placing strain on school budgets. We've scoped the problem area and have confidently made a solution that innovates in the field of EdTech. These achievements reflect our commitment to improving educational equity through innovative technology.
What we learned
Throughout this project, we gained valuable insights into both the technical and business aspects of developing an EdTech solution. From a technical perspective, we deepened our understanding of AI-driven mistake detection, feedback systems, and the complexities of problem generation. We also learned the importance of balancing innovation with user-friendliness—ensuring that both students and teachers can navigate our platform seamlessly. On the business side, we explored market validation, financial modeling, and the challenges of scaling a product in the competitive EdTech space. Most importantly, we recognized the significance of addressing real-world educational inequalities and how technology can play a critical role in bridging the gap for underfunded schools. This experience has not only strengthened our technical and strategic skills but has also reinforced our commitment to making quality education accessible to all.
What's next for ClassMate
As outlined in our Strategic Implementation Plan, our next steps focus on refining the MVP, expanding our reach, implementing key features such as parent view, and ensuring long-term sustainability. In the short term, we’ll finalize the MVP and begin beta testing in select schools to gather real-world feedback on student engagement and model accuracy. Using this data, we’ll iterate and improve our platform to ensure it meets the needs of both educators and students.
In the next phase, we’ll scale our pilot program by forming partnerships with school districts, especially those in low-funding areas, while continuing to develop advanced features like enhanced mistake detection and personalized learning insights. We’ll also focus on strengthening our security infrastructure through high-level encryption and regular audits.
Long-term, our goal is to fully launch ClassMate across a wider range of schools, expand to new educational levels, and continuously innovate our technology. With a growing EdTech market and increasing demand for AI-driven solutions, we aim to position ClassMate as a leader in intelligent, accessible, and equitable education.
