Inspiration ClassMate AI was inspired by the reality that many students spend hours copying notes, revising from long handwritten pages, and struggling to turn raw class content into something easy to study. I wanted to build a tool that makes learning faster, more interactive, and more accessible for students who need quick revision support. Since I am building for Uganda, I also wanted the experience to feel local, practical, and mobile-friendly.
What it does ClassMate AI turns class notes into summaries, key points, quizzes, flashcards, and simple explanations. Students can paste text or upload notes and instantly get study materials they can use to revise smarter. Teachers can also use it to generate exercises and revision questions from lesson content.
How I built it We built ClassMate AI as a Next.js application designed for deployment on Vercel, using a mobile-first UI and Vercel AI SDK for streaming AI responses. The app structure includes a landing page, dashboard, study session flow, quiz view, flashcards, and teacher mode. I focused on keeping the MVP lightweight, clean, and fast so it could work well during a hackathon demo and also feel realistic as a product.
Challenges I ran into One challenge was making the AI output useful without overwhelming the user with too much information at once. Another challenge was designing the experience so it worked well on low-end phones and slow connections, which is important for our audience. I also had to balance speed, polish, and functionality within a short build timeframe while keeping the interface simple enough for students to use immediately.
What I learned Building ClassMate AI taught us how much value comes from solving a very specific problem well. I learned how to structure AI responses for education, how to design a smoother user journey, and how to build a hackathon-ready product that still feels practical. I also learned that a strong local use case can make an AI project much more meaningful and memorable.
What’s next Next, I want to add PDF/image OCR support, offline revision exports, progress tracking, and stronger local-language support. We also want to expand teacher tools so educators can create assessments and learning plans even faster. Over time, we hope ClassMate AI becomes a trusted study companion for students across Uganda.
