Inspiration
Since we are not able to communicate with people face to face during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are not involved with the class or the college life as much as before, and also we want to help people who are shy or not good at expressing themselves to find someone to talk to, we think an app that can provide a platform for students to find classmates is very useful. Also, we believe that working with your classmates can help you to make much progress together. We name it “Class-Buddy”.
What it does
Our app personalizes the user's courses by asking them to enter their email address and their school during registration, thus we will help them to find students who are in the same course. Our app also helps users to find the course description for a particular class and the location of that class for the current semester. For example, if you have COP3530 in this Spring semester, just simply add it to our app, we will find your classmates, location of the classroom. Forget your password? Not worry, we got your back!
How we built it
The app is built on the Android platform with Android Studio, which gave us a huge ability to put our apps on billions of devices. Our app also uses the Google Map’s API, Google Cloud (Firebase) which gave us the finest data on maps.
Challenges we ran into
Once in developing our app, we couldn’t plant Google’s Map API into our project, also when working on the front-end, the design alignment sometimes doesn’t work really well, it kept moving to the wrong place, the animation didn’t work at first, but we finally fix those by debugging and looking at the log.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of developing an app that may help others in the future, and we learned a lot just by trying to build up to something, for example, when we finally made the animation works, and when we successfully made the database works, we were really proud of ourselves.
What we learned
We really learned a lot in computer programming and software development, especially in mobile development. It is an excellent chance for us to learn something new, and have some achievement.
What's next for Class-Buddy
The app Class-Buddy is still in a developing stage. However, the app will advance when we gain more experiences from improving and building the app over time. Now, because of the time shortage, we can only do one University, but in the future, Our primary goals are to expand our database to have more chances to get more users. Secondly, we would like to add more functions to our app, for example, to have a communication platform in the app.
