Inspiration
AI is becoming more powerful every day, but not everyone has equal access to it.
People who are confident in English, familiar with technology, or experienced with prompting already have a major advantage. Meanwhile, ESL speakers, immigrants, people with learning disabilities, and low-literacy users are often left behind.
We created ClariBuddy to make AI feel approachable, supportive, and personalized for everyone.
What it does
ClariBuddy is a beginner-friendly AI assistant that adapts to each user’s communication style and comfort level.
Through a simple onboarding flow, users can share preferences like:
- simpler explanations
- step-by-step guidance
- learning through examples
- comfort with technology
- language preferences
ClariBuddy then adjusts its tone, pacing, and explanation style automatically so users can chat naturally without needing prompting skills or technical knowledge.
How we built it
Frontend
- React + Vite
- Node.js
- Docker
Backend
- FastAPI
- Gemini 2.5 Flash
- Uvicorn
- Docker
We used Gemini to power personalized conversational responses based on each user’s selected communication preferences.
Challenges
As a team of freshmen and complete beginners to full-stack AI development, we learned technologies like React, FastAPI, Docker, backend integration, and AI workflows entirely during the hackathon.
One of our biggest challenges was balancing ambitious accessibility goals with limited time, debugging issues, and learning everything from scratch as freshmen with limited background knowledge.
Accomplishments
- Built a working AI personalization flow
- Created an accessibility-focused onboarding system
- Integrated Gemini into a dynamic chat experience
- Designed an interface that feels welcoming instead of technical
- Built a project focused on reducing AI literacy barriers
What we learned
This project taught us:
- frontend/backend integration
- Docker workflows
- AI application architecture
- accessibility-centered design
- the importance of communication style in AI
We also learned that accessibility is about reducing intimidation and friction for everyone.
Future Plans
We hope to expand ClariBuddy with:
- follow-up questions for questionnaire
- user account functionality to save conversations and custom settings
- ability to work with documents to create custom learning cheat sheets
- image and file attachment support
- accessibility tools like no-mouse navigation, font-size toggles, etc
