Inspiration

This project was inspired by the pressing need to help self-represented persons (SRPs) in the small claims process. With the rise of GenAI, these individuals tend to heavily rely on such technologies to aid them in organising their claims. However, although AI can prove to be a helpful assistant to these SRPs, they often run into issues such as AI hallucinations and incorrect assumptions, hindering their claim and potentially risking them not received the justice they deserve.

Clearclaim arose from a desire to further the mission of fair and equal access to justice, ensuring that SRPs have more high-quality resources to navigate the sometimes complicated legal space, while mitigating the potential adverse effects of overreliance on GenAI.

What it does

Clearclaim is a project that adopts a powerful two-pronged approach, including a webpage and browser extension that work in tandem to aid in the SCT claims process.

The user first interacts with a full-scale, easy to use webpage that helps them first understand what exact they are doing when they start an SCT claim. This website preprocesses and guides the user on the proper information and way to file a claim, and mitigates fact-based hallucinations and confirmation bias.

Alternatively, the user can also opt to interact with a Telegram bot, which provides a more natural, interactive alternative that some users, especially older persons, may prefer.

As equal and fair access to justice is at the heart of our project, Clearclaim incldues a host of accessibility functions, such as voice-based input in order to aid our goal of providing every individual with a fair hearing.

After the user enters all relevant information on the website, the user may move to the actual small claims portal, where the extension automatically fills the form fields with grounded data from the webpage.

This allows the SRP to easily verify and ensure that all the provided information is suitable for a claim in the SCT. Clearclaim helps both SRPs and the SG legal system, allowing for better and smoother claims while relieving the judiciary from an excess of improperly filed and processed claims.

How we built it

In building Clearclaim, we utilised a Next.js frontend and backend, OpenRouter whisper transcription, Gemini for summarisation and Exa for web search and accurate info retrieval.

Challenges we ran into

While in the process of building Clearclaim, the SCT website underwent extended maintenance, preventing live testing of our project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team has built a fully-featured product that can be used to effectively help SRPs in their claims, increasing equitable access to justice for all regardless of their ability to be represented by a lawyer.
