Inspiration
Hospitals face overwhelming surges of patients and paperwork during disasters like floods, earthquakes, and pandemics. Delayed insurance claims slow down patient care and strain hospital resources. We were inspired to build ClaimPal to remove this bottleneck and help healthcare systems respond faster during emergencies and everyday care.
What it does
ClaimPal is an AI-powered platform that simplifies insurance claims. It allows hospital admins to upload multimodal files (PDFs, images, audio), extract critical information using AI, detect missing documents, generate patient summaries, and submit claims with one click. A real-time dashboard helps track the entire claim lifecycle.
How we built it
We used Dash and Bootstrap for the frontend and Python for the backend. We integrated OCR and NLP models for document parsing, used OpenAI Whisper for audio processing, and designed a smart classification system to predict missing documents. GCP handles secure file storage and dashboard updates in real-time.
Challenges we ran into
Parsing messy, unstructured medical documents was difficult, especially when fields like patient names or policy numbers were handwritten or missing. Balancing fast processing with accuracy and ensuring the platform could work across different file types and languages also stretched our problem-solving skills.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created an end-to-end system that works across multiple formats, predicts missing information, and dramatically shortens the claim processing workflow. We’re proud of how quickly we turned a complicated, manual process into something hospitals can use with just a few clicks.
What we learned
We deepened our expertise in multimodal AI (working with text, images, and audio together), building real-time healthcare dashboards, and making AI outputs interpretable for non-technical hospital admins. We also learned a lot about the real-world insurance claim ecosystem and the practical challenges hospitals face every day.
