Elderly people are often neglected and not supported in society, it is our duty as the youth to help them when they are so vulnerable. We wanted to make them feel included and listened to, so many elderly people we talked to often feel like there is no one to talk to or someone they can have fun with.
What it does
We designed Civista with the aim of bringing some light back into the lives of some of the elderly by connecting them with people in their community. You can go to virtual events, chat and play games. We want to bring people together as a community, so that people help each other out during these tough times.
How we built it
We used a prototyping tool to create the website, and moqups to create the app. We sketched out a design and used it to build our product. We used FIREBASE to create a database of user data as the product is in a sense a social platform so user data must be stored efficiently and securely. We also used QuickNinja to create the CIVISTA game; 4 pictures, 1 word.
Challenges we ran into
At the beginning we had a full team, and things were going great. Unfortunately, two of our team members who were on the technical side pulled out, none of us left were that experienced with any of the technical side. We tried our best to learn, but it was difficult and there was no luck.... However, on 2nd of May, two new members joined on the technical side. They had a day and a half to design and code for the technical side, both of them had to learn on the way as well in the span of 48 hours. We tried using React.js to create an app and a User Interface that links to the data stored on Firebase; this was partially successful as we progressed significantly in this process trying to link the firebase database project to the react.js app but were unable to complete this due to issues with downloading certain files and time constraints. We appreciate that people may feel that our product is for the elderly, yet the elderly themselves are not that exposed to technology, but we feel like this is one of the reasons we should further development there is a gap between elderly and the use of technology and we want to bridge that gap so that the elderly can be more connected and engaged in society.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
For our whole team this was our first hackathon, it has been challenging and rewarding at the same time. It was great to be able to create something that could bring our vision to life in the time constraints; all a result of our strong teamwork. In the end we came together and managed to design a product with full good intentions!
What I learned
We learned how to work together as a team, and figure out to face challenges when building our product. Asking for help and learning from other people is a crucial thing we have learnt. We also learned about so many new technologies for making apps, websites, databases and AI systems.
What's next for Civista
Developing it further so that health and well being are tracked, so if there is a cause for concern medically there is someone in the community to help and support them.
