Inspiration
Millions of people face legal issues every year without understanding the language used in courtrooms or legal documents. Legal jargon creates a barrier—especially for underserved communities without legal representation. We wanted to build something that uses the power of AI to break down that barrier and give people access to justice through understanding.
What it does
CiviSense is an AI-powered legal translator that listens to courtroom audio or ingests legal documents and translates the complex legal language into simple, everyday English. It empowers individuals—especially those without legal training or representation—to understand rulings, documents, and legal procedures with clarity.
How we built it
We combined several powerful technologies:
- Speech-to-Text: Using Whisper API to transcribe courtroom audio with high accuracy.
- Legal NLP Engine: A custom pipeline leveraging OpenAI’s GPT-4 for translation of legal jargon, trained and tuned with legal datasets and glossaries.
- Summarization Layer: A refinement layer that converts detailed legal explanations into easy-to-understand summaries.
- Frontend: A simple web-based interface where users can upload audio files or documents and receive human-friendly translations in seconds.
Challenges we ran into
- Translating legal jargon without losing context or precision was extremely challenging.
- Legal language often depends on jurisdiction, case type, and phrasing, making it difficult to generalize.
- Maintaining trustworthiness while simplifying content was a delicate balance.
- Optimizing for speed without sacrificing translation quality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully built a functional prototype that translates both text and audio.
- Created an intuitive UI that makes legal documents approachable for non-experts.
- Helped demystify legal language for people who often get left behind in the justice system.
- Received positive feedback from early users and community testers.
What we learned
- Legal systems are deeply complex—but AI, when trained responsibly, can help make them more accessible.
- Simplifying information isn't just about using smaller words—it’s about retaining meaning while reducing barriers.
- Audio processing combined with NLP opens powerful new doors for accessibility and inclusion.
What's next for CiviSense
- Open-sourcing our model to help nonprofit legal aid organizations scale this tool to real communities.
- Adding real-time translation of courtroom audio via mobile.
- Expanding multilingual support to serve non-English-speaking populations.
- Partnering with legal professionals to ensure ongoing accuracy and compliance.
