CivicSnap: Campus Care, Captured
Elevator pitch:
CivicSnap helps campus communities report facility issues with a photo or voice note. AI turns each report into clear, actionable details so staff can fix problems faster.
Inspiration
Campus maintenance issues are easy to notice but often hard to report clearly or track afterward. We wanted to make it quicker for people to flag problems and easier for facilities teams to respond.
What it does
CivicSnap lets people report campus facility issues with a photo and an optional voice note or description. AI helps turn the report into clear details and suggests a category and priority. Reporters can track progress, while staff can review and update reports from a mobile-friendly dashboard.
How we built it
We built the interface with React, TypeScript, and Vite. Supabase stores report data and uploaded images. Server-side API routes connect to Gemini to draft report details from the submitted photo and optional voice note. Vercel hosts the app and API routes.
Challenges we ran into
We worked to make reporting usable on phones and laptops, handle camera and microphone inputs, and ensure each report includes a photo. Connecting the frontend, API routes, Gemini, and Supabase while keeping credentials out of the repository also took care.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a campus-focused reporting experience with photo capture or upload, optional voice input, AI-assisted drafting, report tracking, and a staff workflow—all in one app.
What we learned
AI is most useful here when it reduces friction while leaving people in control. A draft can help someone report an issue faster, but they should still review and edit it before submitting.
What's next for CivicSnap - Campus Care
We’d like to pilot CivicSnap with a campus facilities team, add notifications for report updates, improve staff assignment and response-time tracking, and make recurring campus issues easier to spot.
