Inspiration

Accessing public service information is often confusing due to complex language, scattered resources, and lack of clear guidance. As a student, I noticed how difficult it can be for people to understand basic processes like required documents, service steps, or where to get help. CivicSense AI was inspired by the idea of simplifying public service interactions using an intelligent, cloud-native approach.

What it does

CivicSense AI is an AI-powered assistant designed to help users easily understand public services. Users can ask questions in natural language and receive clear, step-by-step guidance. The system is designed to support voice-ready responses to improve accessibility and user experience.

How we built it

The project is designed using a cloud-native AWS architecture. The backend logic is handled by AWS Lambda, with API Gateway managing scalable request handling. The system is architected to integrate Amazon Polly as the AI/ML service for text-to-speech, enabling voice-based responses. A simple web frontend allows users to interact with the assistant.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was working with cloud service provisioning under time constraints, especially while configuring AWS services. Managing permissions and regional availability required careful planning. To ensure a reliable demo, the focus was kept on a clear architecture and a working proof of concept.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully designed a complete cloud-native architecture that meets AWS Track requirements, created a functional conversational demo, and clearly integrated AI/ML capabilities focused on accessibility. Delivering a complete end-to-end concept within a short hackathon timeline was a major achievement.

What we learned

This project helped us gain a deeper understanding of serverless architectures, cloud scalability, and how AI/ML services can enhance real-world applications. We also learned the importance of simplicity, clear design, and focusing on user impact when building under tight deadlines.

What's next for CivicSense AI

In the future, CivicSense AI can be expanded with deeper AI integration, multilingual support, real-time data sources, and full deployment across AWS services. With further development, it could become a powerful tool for improving access to public services at scale.
