Inspiration

Bengaluru is known as the Silicon Valley of India, yet its rapid urbanization has led to chronic civic challenges—from unexpected potholes and broken streetlights to unmanaged garbage hotspots and water supply disruptions. While municipal bodies exist, citizens often feel disconnected from the grievance resolution process due to complex reporting mechanisms and a lack of real-time transparency.

We were inspired to build CivicPulse Bengaluru to bridge the gap between citizens and local authorities. We wanted to create an intuitive, AI-powered platform that turns passive complaints into structured, actionable, and community-prioritized civic solutions.

What it does

CivicPulse Bengaluru is a community-driven civic engagement platform designed for Bengaluru residents to report, track, and resolve neighborhood infrastructure issues:

Smart Geo-Tagged Reporting: Citizens can instantly log civic issues—such as potholes, waterlogging, or broken streetlights—with photo uploads and geolocation tagging.

AI Issue Classification: Integrated with Google Gemini AI, the system automatically categorizes reports, assesses urgency scores, and drafts structured summaries for city officials.

Community Validation & Voting: Residents can upvote and comment on issues in their ward to highlight urgent community needs.

Real-Time Status Dashboard: Transparent lifecycle tracking lets citizens monitor issues as they move from Logged to In Progress and Resolved.

Ward-Level Insights: Interactive visual maps and metrics highlight issue distribution across Bengaluru's municipal wards.

How we built it

Frontend: Built with React, TypeScript, and Vite for a fast, responsive mobile-first UI.

Styling: Styled using modern utility CSS and glassmorphism design principles for a clean user interface.

AI & Intelligence: Integrated the @google/genai SDK using Google Gemini API for automated issue analysis, urgency detection, and auto-generated summaries.

Backend & State Management: Node.js/Express server paired with client-side state persistence for smooth offline and online reporting.

Hosting & Deployment: Deployed using Vercel for continuous deployment and edge delivery.

Challenges we ran into

Local Context Accuracy: Fine-tuning the Gemini AI prompts to accurately understand Bengaluru-specific civic terminology (e.g., wards, BBMP departments, localized infrastructure slang).

Handling Location Data: Extracting and standardizing coordinate precision and EXIF metadata from photo uploads to ensure accurate map pinning.

Balancing Performance & API Rate Limits: Optimizing API calls to the Google Gemini model during issue generation while keeping the UI snappy and responsive.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Seamless AI Integration: Building a zero-friction reporting flow where users upload a picture and Gemini AI fills out the issue details, priority, and department routing automatically.

Responsive & Mobile-First Design: Ensuring the application works smoothly on mobile devices for on-the-go reporting in neighborhood streets.

Zero-Cost Deployment: Successfully deploying a full-featured prototype on Vercel without incurring infrastructure costs.

What we learned

Prompt Engineering for Structured Data: Crafting structured output prompts with the Gemini API to consistently receive strict JSON formatting for issue categories and priority ratings.

Geospatial UI Engineering: Integrating interactive maps and location pins effectively within React/TypeScript single-page applications.

User-Centric Civic Design: Keeping reporting forms lightweight and straightforward increases citizen participation.

What's next for CivicPulse Bengaluru

Official BBMP / Ward Authority Dashboard: Building a dedicated portal for municipal officers to claim, update, and resolve reported tasks directly.

WhatsApp / Namma Yatri-Style Bot: Integrating a WhatsApp bot for voice-based and image-based civic reporting in Kannada and English.

Automated RTI Generator: Allowing users to escalate unresolved issues past SLA deadlines via automated Right to Information (RTI) draft generation.

Predictive Civic Analytics: Using historical reporting data to help municipal authorities anticipate infrastructure bottlenecks before they happen.
