Inspiration
Navigating government websites feels like an endless maze of scattered, outdated portals. We wanted to eliminate this confusion by creating a single, clear front door where citizens can access municipal, provincial, and federal services all in one place.
What it does
CivicOS is an all-in-one public service hub:
- Consolidates municipal, provincial, and federal services into a single searchable directory.
- Provides built-in AI assistance and voice guidance to walk users through applications.
- Supports multilingual accessibility with English, French, and Indigenous language support.
- Allows citizens to easily track their active requests and services. ## How we built it
- Frontend: Built with React, TypeScript, and Vite.
- Backend & Database: Integrated Supabase with SQL for structured data storage.
- Auth & AI: Secured user sessions with Auth0 and integrated Google Gemini and ElevenLabs APIs.
- Hosting: Deployed to production on Vercel with custom Porkbun DNS. ## Challenges we ran into
- Configuring Auth0 redirect flows and environment variables securely across environments.
- Designing a SQL schema flexible enough to handle three different levels of government.
- Implementing accurate translations for French and Indigenous languages.
- Resolving complex Git merge conflicts across team branches under tight hackathon deadlines. ## Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Taking the platform from an idea to a fully deployed, live production web app on a custom domain.
- Designing a clean, modern user interface that simplifies civic bureaucracy.
- Bringing authentication, SQL data, and multi-modal AI together seamlessly.
What we learned
- End-to-end production deployment workflows and custom domain DNS configuration.
- How to implement enterprise authentication using Auth0.
- Managing API keys and production environment variables properly.
- Advanced Git collaboration, branch synchronization, and conflict resolution. ## What's next for CivicOS Our ultimate goal is for CivicOS to be officially adopted by government bodies. Next, we plan to add direct form submission with digital signatures, partner with native speakers to expand Indigenous language support, and expand municipal integrations to cities nationwide.
