Inspiration

Civic issues like potholes, garbage dumping, and broken streetlights often go unresolved because citizens lack a transparent and easy way to report problems and track action. Complaints get lost, ignored, or manipulated. We wanted to build a platform that empowers citizens while ensuring accountability and transparency in public services using modern technologies like AI and blockchain.

What it does

Civic Mitra allows citizens to report civic problems using their mobile or web devices with location and photo evidence. AI automatically categorizes issues, while blockchain ensures complaints are immutable and transparent. Users can track complaint status in real time, and authorities receive accurate, location-based reports to take action faster. The platform bridges citizens and local authorities in a trusted, efficient way.

How we built it

We built Civic Mitra using React and Capacitor for cross-platform web and mobile support. Firebase handles authentication, database, and real-time updates. AI services analyze uploaded text and images to categorize issues automatically. Complaints are recorded on blockchain using smart contracts, while images are stored via decentralized storage. Interactive maps help visualize reported issues and locations.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was integrating blockchain smoothly without slowing down the user experience. Handling real-time updates while syncing decentralized storage also required optimization. Another challenge was making the interface simple enough for non-technical users while maintaining advanced functionality.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built a working prototype that combines AI, blockchain, geolocation, and mobile accessibility in a single civic platform. We created a transparent reporting system that citizens can trust, and we demonstrated how emerging technologies can solve everyday governance problems.

What we learned

We learned how to integrate multiple technologies into a single scalable solution and how important usability is for civic platforms. We also learned how blockchain can improve trust when used thoughtfully rather than as a gimmick.

What's next for Civic Mitra

Next, we plan to collaborate with local municipalities for pilot deployments, improve AI accuracy, add multilingual voice reporting, build analytics dashboards for authorities, and introduce reward systems to encourage citizen participation.
